My brothers at the wineshop

We were adviced by a german couple to visit a wine-shop in Povoa De Varzim, and since we were curios about the famous port-wine we weren't late to go there.
It's situated on the road on the way into the the center of the town, coming from north, and when we first got inside we were a bit disappointed. Just around 100 bottles, and among them a lot of whisky, and not at all so much different wine we were expecting.
But then - no worry - we went down in the basement. And "oh my"... There were so many different wines there that I couldn't have counted them all (and even less drank them) if I stayed there for three weeks. So many, and in so many different ways, ages, tastes, prices. I was in heaven. :)

The only problem was that our car was full even before that, given that we were out on a three-week-roadtrip. So we had to choose just the wine we really really had to buy, and then leave the rest there.

So dony´t worry, there are still wine left for you. :-)

If you aren't that interested in the wine, stay on the first floor then. There were everything, from just normal plates to antic chinese vases...

The special food - try it!

You must try the Porto-special, the francesinha Really hard to explain, but it is some kind of sandwich, with cheese, egg and ham, and with a sauce which makes your mouth meltý Amazingly good!
Inside the casino we had another one, where there instead of the ham was a hamburger inside. Not that bad eitherý
In Povoa De Varzim we also first found out about the beer, SuperBock. Easily top 5 in Europe! A must to try!
A bit strange maybe to put this tips in the "must see"-section, but it was soooo good, that if you miss it, you have seen nothing... :)

When you come into the center of Povoa De Varzim you’ll see the bullfight-arena on your right side. Unfortunately we hadn’t time to stay there, even if I didn’t wanted to see a real bullfight, but it would have been nice to see more of the arena. It was huge!

Since Povoa De Varzim is a coast-town there is of course also a beach. A really nice beach too… Long, with beautiful white sand and a lot of space to lay down and relax. The weather wasn’t perfect, but still there were a lot of nicelooking women laying on the beach, or walking around close to it.
Perfect place to be at in other words… :-)

The gang, when we still had some money...

The casino
Close to the ocean the big casino is situated. During the Euro 2004 you could see all the games on a big screen inside the casino, eat dinner, and then go on and gamble a bit.
The lower floor is full of gamble-machines, where you put everything from 5 cent to 2 euro, and then see if you get up the right combination…
Or you go inside the special area where you can play rolette or black jack. For me, who gambles more for fun than winning/losing money it was entertaining, even I felt a bit “on the wrong place” when the guys around me bet up to 500 euro, each time, on the rolette-table, while I put one mark (1 euro) on “black”…
Well, I didn’t lose any money anyway…
On the first floor there are two restaurants, a pianobar and when it isn’t Euro2004 there is also a show for the audience. I think every night, but I’m not sure.
It was a nice place, not so many people that I though would be there, but since we were there during the summer most of the gamblers maybe had went on vacation to another casino…?

Estalagem Santo André: Fantastic hotel close to the beach, Póvoa de Varzim

Henrik_rrb Says:  We stayed at Estalagem Santo André for the first six nights of our Euro2004-trip, and had a great time there. The hotel is situated 50 meters from the beach, which was perfect for us. The personal on the hotel was incredible friendly, everyone from the old bartender, to the...

There went local buses from Santo Andrý, where our hotel was, to Povoa De Varzim, and from there to Porto. The price were low, but the trip took quite long time. So we decided it was worth to pay a taxi instead. But if youýre alone, and have enough time, havenýt problem traveling with a warm bus etc etc, you should take the bus. Price Povoa De Varzim-Porto one-way circa 4-5 euro.
The buses seemed to go quite often, but stopped on many places during the trip...

Taxi

Taxi was the best way to go around in and into Varzim, and to our close-by-hotel. Not that expensive, although not that cheap either. For going in 10 minutes by taxi we paid 6-7 euro, and then for going with taxi to Porto we paid between 30 and 40 euro, depending on how lucky you were finding the right taxi-driverýK
Most of them tried to milk some extra euro out of us, saying that it costed extra with the toll on the highway, tax wasnýýt included or just giving us a circa-price at the beginning of the trip ýýwell, somewhere between 35 and 40 euroýý. For some reason it always ended in the higher price, and you could not say anything about itýK
On the positive side I must say that all the drivers were really friendly. Not many of them could speak English, but that didnýýt stopped themýK They talked in portugese instead, and then assumed that we understoodýK ýý For me it went quite well, since I could put in some words in Italian now and then, so we both understood sooner or later. Worse for my friends, who just had Swedish and English to rely onýK
