keeping a budget in portugal.

by rkearns

advance planning is a good start. you can purchase your tickets months in advance and not feel the sting when you're about to take off. with months of planning you can save and really figure out where you want to go, do, see. spontaneity is always fun. i would just make sure you have a place the first night you arrive in a town. it's not fun walking around with backpacks in the middle of the night, possibly lost, and being a target. but they're good for stories when you're back home. there are many good hostels on hostellinginternational.com i use them or hostels.combootsnall.com is a decent site and so is couchsurfing.com (but you have to host a guest before you can stay on someone else's couch for free.in lisbon, there are some REALLY nice hostels. bus travel is cheap and the south of portugal, faro, is also cheap. it's a small town on the coast so you get the local experience. will...

Alentejo beaches

by berenices

Among the more interesting beaches in this region are Porto Covo and Vila Nova de Milfontes. While Porto Covo has dramatic cliffs and narrow, hidden beaches, Vila Nova has much wider beaches, and as it is where the Mira River (Rio Mira) flows out, the confluence of these waters makes it a rich feeding ground for fish and shellfish, where there is an abundance of. Porto Covo has a few restaurants (good ones) but there's nothing much in terms of entertainment. Vila Nova de Milfontes, which is just a bit southwards is much bigger then Porto Covo so offers more options for stay and entertainment. along the beach, just downwards of the viewing deck, there is a bar/grill restaurant where quite a lot of people go to enjoy a drink or two. At low tide, it's quite exciting to go out to the tide pools -- a lot of people pick shells early in the day, and it's quite common to see schools of...

Exploring Central Portugal

by berenices

Between Coimbra and Covilha is a very interesting small village (part of the historic villages route called Aldeias Historicas) called Piodão. it is in the middle of the mountain range called Serra de Açor, with houses made of schist rocks sitting dramatically on a rather steep hillside. i also recommend going slightly further than Covilha, to Belmonte, and to nearby Sortelha (again part of the Historic Villages route). this region, close to the border, is immensely interesting for sightseeing and historical purposes, so there's plenty to choose from. Guarda, just a little further north, is also worth a visit -- go to the historic center and see the majestic Sé or the cathedral. i was there just yesterday, at the end of a weeklong trip to the center and north of the country, and was very much impressed by it (unfortunately, not many people know about this cathedral). note the unique...

Best beaches near Lisbon

by SOLODANCER

Check out the fun and delightful seaside town of Ericeira in the Estremadura region of Portugal. The location is fantastic with long stretches of beaches and enough night life to occupy oneself with and plentiful of great restaurants. If you're looking for a more sedate and likewise typically Portuguese setting, not far, actually closer than Ericeira is to Lisbon, is the fishing village of Sesimbra in the gorgeous natural preserve of the Arrabida Peninsula where you'd find some of Portugal's truly outstanding and relatively remote beaches. Good luck and happy trails.

Portuguese Food -fish and sea food

by a2lopes

Being a country of sailors and fisherman Portugal is known to be a paradise for fish and sea food lovers. A symbol for Portugal

by a2lopes

If you think of Portugal what comes up to your mind?Well that’s a good question. Beyond the Portuguese flag you may come up with a postcard photo - a cliffy beach in Algarve, or maybe Belém Tower in Lisbon, or even the Vasco da Gama bridge (longest in Europe). If you are interested in personalities and history maybe you can think of Henry the Navigator with his large Burgundian hat (at the monument to the Discoverers). Or if you like politics maybe you think of José Barroso, the president of the European Commission. You may come up with a product -like a glass of Port wine or olive oil- or an artifact made of cork (Portugal produce over 50% of cork worldwide). You may choose a gastronomy item such as a yummy custard tart or a smoked pork meet sausage. You may even come up with a cliché such as a Lisbon's yellow tram. You may call it kitsch but the cockerel from Barcelos is kind of...
