Albufeira.

by Maurizioago

Once Albufeira was a fishing village; today it is a holidays resort with lots of beaches. I think they are more than 20. I liked very much its old center with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Albufeira has a big main square with cafes, restaurants and a pedestrian street full of shops; rua 5 de Octubro is the name if my memory serves me well. Here you also find the tourist office. The bus station in Albufeira is very far from the town center; so I had to walk a lot to get there. Later I was told there is a bus stop not very far from the town center. It is opposite a shopping mall (sorry, I don't remember its name).Albufeira is situated 39 km far from Faro.

Tavira.

by Maurizioago

Tavira is a nice town in the Algarve. It is divided in two by the river Gilao. This is crossed by three bridges. One of these is of Roman origin and was reconstructed in the 17th century. The town has lots of churches, cafes and shops. I didn't stay long in Tavira; perhaps three hours. Anyway I enjoyed its 13th castle. Its walls are well preserved and there is a nice garden inside. The castle has also some towers. I climbed to the top of most of these to enjoy the landscape over the town and some private gardens.Tavira is located 31 km. east of Faro.

hiya, well I was living in albufeira actualli last year and i dont think i got bitten by a mozzy once. not to say there arent any but if there r then they r certainly in small minorities. If you'd like any info on the best places to visit whilst there i would gladly sshare some tips and albufeira secret spots with u. It is an amazing beautiful place but its a lot better if u know where to go.My fav thing bout portugal is the way every one is soo laid back and relaxed. I know it sounds weird but its kind of this magical little place where everything just seems to run smoothly and perfectly. My fondest memory would have to be of my first night out there. I had no idea just how amazing it would be and it blew me away. There is a restaurant in the old town square that is perfect. I cannot remember the name of it but u cannot miss it... it is oposite the rock cafe near to the small road that...

Driving in Portugal

by hhk

Despite many warnings about crazy Portuguese drivers, I found driving in Portugal a relative breeze with two conditions. 1) You must be a confident driver, 2) you must own a GPS.If you are not confident, especially in the use of roundabouts, you are in trouble. If you drive slow and scared, you are in trouble. Consider *not* driving if fast traffic bothers you.The GPS is necessary because there are several routes from one town to another and the roadmaps are not detailed enough to allow you to make an intelligent decision. Many of the roads look reasonably straight on the map but are in reality, very curvy and slow.As for Portuguese drivers, they like to drive fast but they are predictable and courteous. Only in Lisbon do they get impatient and use their horns on you. In other towns, I had no issue with other drivers. They seem to be much more attentive and skilled than the average North...

Ericeira.

by Maurizioago

Ericeira is a nice seaside village perched on cliffs overlooking the ocean. It is some 10 km. far form Mafra. It was from there that in october 1910 king Manuel II and his mother Amelia set sail from Ericeira harbor to a life of exile in England. This village has lots of restaurants, cafes and shops.

Tomar.

by Maurizioago

Tomar is a nice town 137 km far from Lisbon. It is located in the centre of Portugal. Its main sight is the castle-convent of the Templars. It was initially built as a castle in 1160. Its complete building lasted until the 17th century. Inside the convent there are eight cloisters.

Car Hire

by carnsoreboxer

This is expensive in Portugal. We were promised a car with our apartment but it had failed its test and owner never told us! Having checked out numerous car rental companies there we logged onto arguscarrental and booked a car as if we were only flying in the following day - half the price!

Lagos; another seaside town in the Algarve.

by Maurizioago

Lagos was the capital of Algarve from 1576 to 1756. Prince Henry the Navigator lived, worked and died there. The town has well preserved ancient walls, some churches and lots of cafes, restaurants and accomodations. It is located 82 km. west of Faro.I didn't like much Lagos, but I have to say that its beaches are really very beautiful.

Untouristy places in the Algarve

by SOLODANCER

If your twelve days are all that you're going to spend in the Algarve, you'd definitely be able - especially with a car - to see and experience plenty enough places to make your visit quite memorable. Limit your time in Faro itself, tho this small city has some fine points: its old quarter and a fine archeological muuseum, it's convenient only as a transport hub. The places recommended so far by Donna and Slopes are wonderful places you ought surely to visit. But knowing the Algarve quite well myself, I'd add a few which are my favorites. If you like beach life, the gogeous sleepy town of Tavira has a superb beach on its Ilha da Tavira, a spit of honey-color sand bar off the town itself. If you like less tourists, 10-minute ride from Tavira is a most dreamy hamlet of Cacelha Velha which sits on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic with its wide and long stretch of deserted beaches. On the...

Where summer is longest.

by SOLODANCER

I join in with the recommendation of the Algarve, the southern region of Portugal. Summer here is the longest. Even in November the ocean water is agreably warm for swimming especially in the eastern side towards the sleepy town of Tavira. But at same time sudden rainstorm and gusts of wind can also occur by around this time of year, tho not expectedly on daily basis. If you're coming out England, check out British Airways, they have daily flights into the small city of Faro, capital of the Algarve. The flight from Heathrow is a mere 2 1/2 hours away. If you decide on the Algarve, email if you need more info. Happy trails.
