This style of architectural ornamentation marked a transition from the Gotic to the Reinassance in Portugal. It lasted from 1490 to 1540. Manuelino, or Manueline takes its name from King Manuel I. Its characteristics are elements of marine flora, shells, ropes and oriental elements.
Alentejo is hotter than a baking oven in the summer. It's inadvisable to visit in july or august. In Spring the fields and hills of Alentejo are blossoming with flowers, but also in autumn it's worth visiting.

So one of the best kept secrets of portugal is the beer. Especially Superbock. I consider my self somewhat of a beer snob, but this stuff is tasty, it goes down easy and it is especially refreshing. Not to mention it has a rather high alcohol content, which makes me even more happy. This was great especially durring Euro 2004.
One of the characteristics of Lisboa is the coexistence of splendid buildings and poorly maintained structures. The range goes from awesome Manueline architecture down to torn out houses that would otherwise be spectacular.Lisboa is not unique in this sense, but my perception is that the falling apart and the least nice looking buildings don't happen to be in no-man's-land. At least during daytime we experienced absolutely no safety problem in certain city areas.
Nicely squeezed between the Tejo river and the hills to its northwest, Lisboa is probably the main destination for tourists who choose Portugal. In August the city teems with visitors and it's a good idea to make advance reservations. We snugged in the comfort of a fairly priced and centrally located 4-star hotel room. This solution proved excellent to walk around without using public transportation, except for a ride on No. 28 typical tramway.The city is spread over several hills and do expect some exercise to explore the ups and downs around the Baixa district. This area was rebuilt after the earthquake occurred in 1755 and is dominated by the Rossio - or Praça Dom Pedro IV - and Praça do Comercio, connected by a few parallel streets of which Rua Augusta is the preferred strip for strollers. I strictly recommend to newcomers in Portugal - visiting any place - at first visit Tourist office. You find it easily by road sighns. They always gave as all maps and schems we need, marked the stops and working hours, and the numbers of routines. As a lot of travel guides told unfortunately, it's almost always useless to ask the people in the street about directions. Only correct information during 2 weeks of our travel we received from policmen and - and tourist offices, so don't ignore them)))
Although ATM machines are to be found all over, the transaction is always in local currency. BE PREPARED. For example, do not go up to an ATM and think you'd like to withdraw $500 worth of local currency. You first must know the amount in local currency that $500 will buy. I always carry a currency cheat sheet when travelling.
