The Sintra National Palace

by santax

Although not as spectacular from the outside as the nearby Pena Palace, Sintra's National Palace is also quite interesting. Its most striking feature is a pair of conical chimneys that are part of the giant kitchen. Other outstanding rooms are richly decorated in tiles and Moorish features, making this a fascinating place to visit.

The extraordinary Mafra Palace.

by santax

Mafra Palace is the country's biggest, also incorporating a basica and convent. It is so huge and was so expensive to build, that it almost bankrupted the nation. It is the building with the most bells in the world, and includes 880 halls and rooms, 5200 doorways, and 2500 windows. Its library has about 40,000 books and includes the earliest edition of Homer in Greek. It's one of the finest libraries in the world. Another room that stands out is the dining room, with chandeliers made of antlers and chairs upholstered in deerskin. The palace was used by the royal family in the 18th and 19th centuries, and another interesting feature is the king's apartments being so distant from the queen's apartments, on opposite sides of the massive building.

Must see Sintra

by santax

You absolutely must visit Sintra, just outside Lisbon, and classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its natural beauty along with its concentration of palaces and villas is stunning. Don't miss Pena Palace, looking as if it was taken right out of a fairytale or Disneyland. But it's no fantasy -- it's a real palace, used by the Portuguese royal family in the 1800's. The interior is just as impressive as the architecture outside. Here's a picture.

Beautiful Islands

by xicomelo

Açores (Azores in english) is, in my opinion, the most beautiful region of Portugal and shouldn't be missed on a trip to this country. This archipelago of nine islands its placed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and each island is a unique and completely distinct place. You have beautiful green places to enjoy, mountains (highest one with 2350 meters), great cliffs, many vegetal species or vulcanos. In the Ocean, there are dolfins and whales, a beautiful sea coast and some dreaming beaches. To visit this archipelago you'll need, at least, 3 days for each island. There are cheap flights from Lisbon to Azores (about 150 EUR round trip). In the archipelago you can move from island to island by boat (really inexpensive with prices starting from 2 EUR per trip) or by air (about 50 EUR per flight or 75 EUR round trip).Official Azores Tourism: www.drtacores.pt

Not everyone speaks English

by irvbur

Do not assume the cab drivers speak English. Have someone at the hotel desk write out your destination(s) in the local language on the back of the hotels card. Write the same thing in English on the front of the card. Use a separate card for each place you want to visit. Show the card to the taxi or bus driver. Make sure you have the name & address of your hotel written in the local language. Keep the cards, they make great momentos.

lovely algarve

by chukngec

the algarve is wonderful, but go as far west as you can. the first hour driving going west from faro is largely cheapo accommodations for "lager louts" and loud germans. Go at least as far as Lagos. Take in the Portuguese bull fights (they don't kill the bull), and it is all done from horseback--very impressive.

Cork Trees

by freya_heaven

170,000 tons of cork per year are cut off Portuguese cork oak trees. Portuguese cork accounts for 55% on the worlds cork. One third of this is grown by & controlled by 1 family. A cork oak is grown for at least 25 years before the first cork is cut off, then it is only every 9 years after the first stripping. It is actually illegal in Portugal to cut cork off a tree under a certain size! A well looked after cork oak should live about 100 years.
