Religion and beliefs

by ncfg

The chapels up on the hills above the villages generally attract the most archaic festivals. According to the belief that dates back to the Middle ages, these chapels protected the people, their cattle and their crops. They were fundamental in the processions that produced rogations and appeals that medieval and modern Christianity so readily absorbed.

Portuguese Beer

by mikelisaanna

Portuguese beer was a pleasant surprise - definitely the best beer that we have had in Southern Europe. Sagres and SuperBock are the two primary brands. Each comes in three varieties - light, medium, and dark. Our favorites were the mediums brewed by each company. SuperBock's medium beer is named SuperBock Abadia.

Meal 'Starters'

by Bwana_Brown

One of the dining customs that we had not experienced before dealt with small tidbits placed on your table to tide you over while awaiting the serious eating. These usually consisted of a plate of black olives, some buns and a few rounds of different kinds of cheese. Even though you had not ordered these items, the custom is that, if you partake of them while sipping your drinks as you wait for the arrival of the main courses, a small fee will be added to your bill depending on which of the items you decided to enjoy. It usually was only a nominal fee of a few Euros, well worth it for the option to snack or not depending on how hungry you were at the time! This scene is of a typical breakfast set-up at a Residencial in Peniche, where we had spent the night after our 'Ilha da Berlenga' adventures!

Medieval villages

by santax

One of my favorite things about Portugal is how well preserved its small medieval villages are. The most famous is Obidos (seen on this picture), but two other favorites of mine are Marvão and Monsaraz in the Alentejo province. All the houses are immaculately painted and everything is very well preserved. The best thing about them is that in Monsaraz and Marvão especially (not so much the case in Obidos) is that tourism has not overrun the place, and you really do feel like you've stepped back in time.
