Caldo Verde, Barrio Alto: a lovely evening out

by piglet44

WE went up to Barrio Alto on our first night in Lisbon as we were told that was the best place to hear some Fado music. We wandered around a long time trying to choose a place but could not see much difference between them. The prices were much the same and so were the menus. We were solicited by several men trying to entice us into their places.Eventually we chose one mainly on the basis of it being small and quiet ,as we did not want to sit somewhere where there would be large bus groups of tourists. The place was pleasant if a little too empty but started to fill up gradually as the show went on.There were different singers, two different women and one man, accompanied by the traditional Fado instruments. It was very pleasant, and the meal was nice too. Can't tell you if it was a high quality show as I have no clue about Fado but we certainly enjoyed ourselves. The Bairro Alto is a great...

Various: Don't expect to come home until morning!

by acemj

Head toward Bairro Alto if you're in Lisbon. The party doesn't get started until around midnight, but once it does, it doesn't stop until morning. You'll find plenty of options within a relatively small cluster of blocks, so just stroll around and go into a place that looks interesting to you. There's a Cuban place called La Bodeguita that was particularly energetic. Check out my Lisbon page for details.

O Fado: Fado in Oporto

by jorgejuansanchez

Fado show close to the Commerce Palace in Oporto. It starts at 9.30 PM and if there are more than 20 customers the owner , Senhor Almeida, will invite a group of locals to perform pleasant folkloric dances and songs to interrupt the (sometimes) sad fado songs. informal dressing

Coconuts: Not so coco not so nuts

by UmaBrasileira

I personally thought it was a disappointment. When I went there, they played techno-like music and it was full of "young" people, around the ages 18-24 I´d say. Unless you don't like a wider range of ages and other music I don´t think its worth going down to Cascais in the middle of the night. It is about 40 minutes by train from Lisbon. ~5 mins and 5 Euro from Estoril. It has a very small karaoke room. A "bar room" and a veery big room for the general dance area.I really like portuguese people in general but the ones I met there were not very nice, I would recommend going there with alot of friends, else it doesn´t seem like you could tag along with any of the groups there already. Don't think there was a specific dresscode, people came in very different clothes. Really "nightclubish" and not so much shirt shorts n slippers

Mal Cozinhado, Oporto: The best fafo in Portugal

by jorgejuansanchez

This is the best fado show in Portugal, better than Café Luso in Lisbon, because it also incorporates the Coimbra fado modality. The house is a National Monument, an old stoned palace from the XIV century, with an enchanting medieval atmosphere by the river Tegu, in the UNESCO historical part of the town. It is the only fado place in Portugal where the mythical Amalia Rodrigues played, and also Dulce Pontes.Price for two drinks plus show is about 20 euros. Dinner with show is about 35 euros. Ask for the tripas (intestines), the local Oporto dish since the times of Enrique the Navigator, for which the Oporto inhabitants are known as tripeiros. You can dress as you like.

by Entropic

The place is between Belem and Bairo Alto.. not sure what's it is called exactly. It's a street on the edge of the river lined with pubs, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs. The vibe is fun and welcoming. As we were passing by we heard a Bob Marley cover from inside an Irish Pub and decided to make it our destination for the night. A classic rock cover band inside was fun, beers were great. casual to clubby

Anywhere on the Strip (I liked Wild n Co): Check out the Strip

by mrshlomi

When darkness falls in Albuferia, everyone heads to the main strip in town, you cant miss it. It has all the bars, nightclubs, and an ongoing "happy hour" with signs outside saying things like happy hour 10pm to 8am. Its a wonderful place to stop at a cafe during the day and have a cool beer (I love super bock green, its a nice beer with a bit of lemon in it) at night the place comes alive. Just walking up and down the stip you can really get into it. Very casual

Bario Alto: Nightlife in Lisbon

by nursesweet

While in Lisbon, It is definitely worth hitting up Bario Alto. The atmosphere is alive and vibrant in the evening, with many people hanging out in bars and restaurants, and shopping in the unique, eclectic shops which line the streets. Many different types of restuarants can be found in Bario Alto, including many excellent ethnic choices. Music can be heard while stolling down the streets from the various nightclubs. Fado can also be found in this district. We didn't chance going to see Fado as we were told than many places are tourist traps, and it is best to go where the locals go, otherwise you many have a hefty bill and a mediocre experience by the end of the evening. Casual atire

Night 7

Don't be also fooled by my words, as Lisbon is smaller than Capitals like Paris or London, so you can find some times empty streets!but a capital is capital and it is rare anyway to make such a picture as this one here LOL
