Dolphin watching - if you're lucky

by Dominiques

When you're visiting the Alentejo region, you need a car to travel from lazy village to deadbeat town. Best starting point ofr your discovery of Alentejo is Lisbon and driving over the Vasco de Gama bridge towards the south and towards Alentejo. One of the things not so many people do, is going to the Reserva Natural Do Estuário Do Sado, a national park around the river Sado south of the capital. It is the home of storks, dolphins, flamingo's, ... . You can go on a boat river on the Sado and some dolphins if it's nice enough weather. It's a wonderful environment, with or without dolphins.

Barcelos

by magor65

In Barcelos (365 km north of Lisbon) you won't meet many tourists. This town's only claim to fame seems to be Barcelos rooster, which has become an unofficial symbol of Portugal. There are several versions of the legend about the rooster. Here is one of them:A pilgrim was going to Santiago de Compostela, but in Barcelos he was accused of the crime he hadn't committed. After passing the sentence, the judge settled to dinner. The pilgrim in an act of despair declared that even a roast cock from the judge's table could confirm his innocence. In spite of that the man was hanged. When the loop tightened around his neck the cock crowed three times. The judge immediately ran up to the gallows where it turned out that the man was still alive. Some years later the man returned to Barcelos where he founded a cross to commemorate the events and the rooster.Today we can buy brightly painted...

Island hopping in Portugal

by Maria_80

If you are in Portugal, go to visit at least one of the beautiful islands that this country has to offer. The flights are relatively cheap for example from Lisbon to Azores and during summer season you can also take a ferry from one island to another. I recommend for example the combination of Sao Miguel - Faial - Pico.See for example http://www.azores.com/

Vila Nova de Cerveira

by ncfg

Vila Nova de Cerveira is a small town with more than 9000 inhabitants, situated in the region Vale do Minho, at the border to Galiza (Spain). You can find there a castle surronded by walls and some houses built on them. The castle's construction was ordered by the King D. Dinis and has seven towers, still well preserved, thanks to the 1940's restoration works. Inside the castle, there's the Misericordia Church, Senhora da Ajuda Chapel, the old Court, the Chain and the Pillory. The Pousada D. Diniz was built inside the former wall from the 18th century, becoming a Pousada in September 3rd 1982. From the walls you can can enjoy a magnificent view over the Minho River.

Caminha

by ncfg

About 17 minutes by train you can reach Caminha from Viana do Castelo.Once a strong riverport, the ancient fortress town of Caminha is almost surrounded by water. Proudly situated opposite Spain at the mouth of the enchanting River Minho, it has been inhabited since Celtic and Roman times. Once there you can enjoy THE Caminha's Gothic parish church, Igreja Matriz and in the main square there are 15th-century battlemented buildings. From Caminha you can take a ride in ferryboat just for 1,20 euros (two way ticket) to the nearby village Camposancos in Galicia - Spain, there aren’t much to see but you can enjoy great beaches there.

Ilha da Berlenga

by Bwana_Brown

You won't hear much about this small group of islands, located just off the coast at Peniche, about 2 hours north of Lisbon, but they were one of the highlights of our Portugal trip! For the sake of a relatively cheap boat tour fee, you get to enjoy this amazing bird sanctuary island and it's ancient Fort de Sao Joao Baptista, re-built in the late 1600s after it was blown up by a Spanish attacking force in 1666.Nobody lives on the island year-round, and in summer there is only an itinerant population of a few campers/tourists and the naturalists who are studying the local wildlife. After docking in Caramusteira Bay, as seen in the photo, you can either head off into the hills on your own (no roads on the island) for a wonderful hike along the cliffs to the Fort and other attractions or you can hire a small local boat to take you snorkeling or exploring the island's many sea caves. The old...

Batalha

by ant1606

Convento de Santa Maria da Vitória, mostly known as Mosteiro da Batalha, stands in all of its magnificency as there are no other buildings to prevent its imposing wholeness. Sunrays piercing the stained glass of the gothic windows created an amazing atmosphere as the cathedral seemed to be populated only by huge pillars and empty benches in a surreal hush.Exquisite marble artwork decorates the tomb of King João I, whose body rests in peace since the early 1400 next to that of his wife Philippa of Lancaster.

Nazare'

by ant1606

This lovely town turned its fishing economy into pure tourism and it's a sought after destination located about 100 Km (60+ mi) north of Lisboa. Nazare's white houses and their tiled roofs are best appreciated form the Miradouro, the highest part of town overlooking the wide sandy crescent that teems with sunbathers in summer. Up here, a large square has its obvious church and ladies wearing traditional garments, not fancy but definitely outdated for present standards, sell food-to-go and entertain visitors with their candid smiles.A small staircase takes down to a tiny, beautifully tiled chapel with a view over the town. From the Miradouro, take a walk down to the rocky cape of Pedro do Guilhim and the splendid, empty beach north of it.

obidos

by quartinb

Nestled within the walls of a 12th-century castle, the town of Obidos lies alongside one of Portugal's modern highways. Filled with small shops catering to visitor and hords of touristsColorful painting and tile adorns the whited walls of the buildings. Obidos may easily have appeared no different to a 19th-century visitor.Although attracting its share of visitors from throughout Portugal and the world, the town of Obidos is simply home to many whose families have lived here for generations.
