Obidos

by ant1606

Obidos is a pretty little village north of Lisboa, and another UNESCO site. Its white-and-blue houses and a castle in perfect conditions are the main attractions for the elbowing visitors. Traffic is banned for non-residents but a large parking lot awaits near the main entrance gate. There are two main streets from which cobblestone alleys lead to neat houses built next to the ramparts that enclose the whole village.

Castelo de Vide

by ant1606

Close to Marvão and the Serra de São Mamede, this charming little town deserves a visit for its castle and the old quarters that had preserved their original ambience through the centuries. Nearby the castle it's common to see local residents chatting in the shade to escape the heat of summer months, and a walk down the Fontana da Vila, the town spring fountain, is a pleasant trip through the ages. An ancient synagogue built in XIII century is said to be one among the oldest in the whole of Europe. Cats seem to enjoy a quiet life as well as that of elderly residents, always ready to greet bypassers and foreigners with a genuine smile. The castle and ramparts probably didn't undergo restoration, or at least if they did it must have been quite a while ago. Don't expect to find something outrageously fancy, but rather a real, as-it-was complex still in excellent conditions.Have a sit...

Marvão

by ant1606

After visiting Elvas and a quick look at Portalegre, through the interesting and cooler Serra de São Mamede we reached the beautiful village of Marvão with its XIII century walls and fort atop the rocky hill. There is one parking lot just outside the only access gate, after which a narrow passage can allow cars to another lot inside the walled area, anyway it's recommended to leave the vehicle outside. We parked our motorcycle inside, right next to a no-park sign. An arrow underneath the sign was judged to mean "no parking from this point on", we were then on the right side and happy as it was the last spot available in the shade. To avoid playing the role of nasty tourists and to make sure, we asked a local guy who was about to leave aboard his scooter - which was by the way parked on the "wrong" side. He curiously replied he didn't know the meaning of the sign but, after peeking on the...

Elvas

by ant1606

The visit of ancient fortified towns near the border was in our plans and we first addressed Elvas. Although we came from Evora, Elvas is the first town for those coming from the Spanish city of Badajoz. The majestic aqueduct welcomed us but road works made it hard for us to reach the city center, and even harder was to find that the underground parking is forbidden to motorcycles. We then saw what we could prior to attempt going up a military fort perched on a different hill. The fort is active and the road banned to vehicles at halfway, therefore we had to stop there for a quick look at the whole of Elvas before proceeding to Portalegre.

Estremoz, Vila Viçosa and Borba

by ant1606

Located near Estremoz, Vila Viçosa is a quiet village where the façade of many houses is made of nearby quarried marble. The most impressive building is the Paço Ducal.Tourists are very scarce in Borba and the genuine daily street market activities around the main square go on undisturbed.A quick visit to these villages might reveal the real life in the Portuguese province, well portrayed by the quiet and merry pace of residents. With so much to see ahead of us we had no time to stop in Estremoz, but the view of the walled city atop a hill covered with olive trees was quite nice.

Dolmens, Cromlechs and Menhirs

by ant1606

When I took a brochure about megalithic erected stones in Portugal, I was amazed at the abundance of sites scattered throughout the country. We decided to visit some of these in a loop west of the city of Evora through Valverde, Sao Brissos and Guadalupe. The narrow minor roads develop through gentle hills dominated by cork trees, the only human presence being a few men at work with stacks of cork bark sections ready for shipment.Anta Grande do Zambujeiro is the tallest and largest dolmen in IberiaCromeleque dos Almendres is a circle counting nearly a hundred stonesMenhir dos Almendres is a tall, single erected stoneDolmen Capela de Nossa Senhora do Livramento is a curious example of how a stone structure can be converted into a chapel. These interesting megalitic sites are accessible on gravel roads for free visits. We went there on our own but we saw a small bus taking a couple of...

Praia Odeceixe

by ant1606

East of Monchique, the small town of Odeceixe and relevant beach is a pleasant getaway for sunbathers. The Portuguese coast is dotted with such places, checking them all was not the scope of our tour but we found this one particularly nice although not really deserted. There must be a reason if, telling by foreign license plates, many Europeans travel half across the continent to reach these places.
