Maia

by ncfg

Well, just before you reach Porto town you have Maia , a modern town with a small Zoo where you can enjoy the animals and a little show with sea lions and reptiles. The entrance fee is 2,50 euros with the sea lions show included. From the Zoo you can take a small train to visit the town and it cost only one euro.

Vila Nova de Gaia

by ncfg

Vila Nova de Gaia, what i can say about this place?Well, it is a modern district located in the southern bank of the Douro River. Just looking to Gaia you can admire the beautiful Ribeira in Porto. As you cross the bridge Luís I to Vila Nova de Gaia, you may admire the “Rabelo” boats on the riverbank. They are the symbol of the famous Port Wine and the trademark of the Port Wine Cellars. You can see a Rabelo boat and a part of the bridge Luís I on my photo. I took it from Porto town.If you go to this beautiful city don’t forget to visit the Port Wine Cellars and taste the famous and delicious Porto wine.Beside this you have beautiful beaches in Gaia district.

See the Monchique area.

by grandad

Leaving the beaches of the Algarve take a taxi or a hire car into the Monchique area inland.See the orange and lemon groves and observe the cork trees which are used for the cutting of cork bark.Just the area to enjoy a good local meal at a restaurant out of the way and where the owners are delighted to serve you the freshest of local cuisine.

Fresh Oranges

by Markyreid

If you rent your own car while in Portugal then venturing into the remote parts becomes very easy. Along the smaller roads their are numerous locals selling local produce. We came across a number of orange stalls and strawberry stalls. The food was cheap and of good quality.

Another of these fortified border towns is Valence, near the mouth of the river Minho, which here draws the border with Spain. It is located just opposite the also fortified twin city of Tui.This picture shows the main square in Valence-on-Minho.

odemira

by quartinb

__________________________________________________alentejoOpening its way through hills and valleys to the ocean, the river Mira describes at a certain point a singular deviation. This was the place chosen, thousands of years ago, by Roman and Arabic people to settle down. From the waters, Odemira borrows its name and its importance along the centuries. The village has expanded along the mountain slopes with its beautiful white houses ornarnented with colourful flowers.____________________________________________

vidigueira

by quartinb

_________________________________________________alentejoWithout any great strategic importance in military terms. vidigueira development took place along essentially agricultural lines. This fact is easily proved by its wine production. Its fame as a wine-producing centre already existed in the fifteenth century. The name of Vidigueira is also linked to the historical figure of Vasco da Gama, to whom D. Manuel I gave the title of the Count of Vidigueira in 1519. The Casa da Vidigueira, founded at that time by Vasco da Gama, remained in the same family until the twentieth century.____________________________________________
