It is probably stating the obvious to point out that the Algarve region of Portugal can be searingly hot in summer; suffice to say that I found high factor sun cream, a hat and sunglasses were essential before venturing out. And if someone could invent a mini air-conditioning unit I’d bring that along too!

DO plan your wardrobe in such a way that you'll have no problem mixing and matching your outfits and it should be able to see you through from day to night. So in this instance, that little black dress WILL come in VERY handy for the night events AND in the day time too! :-)) DON'T forget to transfer all your toner, cleanser, night cream et al into small plastic containers - to save luggage space, of course. :-))) These days, I bring along 2 to 3 types of cameras with me and load them with 2 or 3 different types of films i.e. ASA200 film (for day) and the high speed Kodak 800 film for museums or places that do not allow flash photography. DON'T forget to bring along your much-treasured ATM card to withdraw cash. Yes, no need to rush to the money-changers to change all your currencies into Portuguese Escudos before your trip. And DON'T use your Visa or Mastercard to withdraw cash....

It depends, of course, which season of the year you plan to travel here.In the summer pack light, you won't need too much clothes because it's quite warm here with an average temperature of 28 - 32. You'll only need a jacket to wear in the evenings in places near the sea! If you're like me you'll spend a lot of films. I really like photography specialy because photos are the best memories you'll take back home with you. You don't need a very sophisticated camera. Just take your normal camera, a couple of films and don't miss any oportunity to get the perfect picture, you know that if you won't you'll regrett it for ever!!

Canadian 'snowbirds' lured to the sunny Algarve January through March by pictures of palm trees, flowers in bloom and folks lounging poolside should be prepared nonetheless for cool mornings and evenings. The day warms up quickly, temperatures at noon can be very warm to hot, then cools off just as quickly with sunset. Sweaters and jackets needed. Commercial laundries offer 'by the pound', wash and folded, as well as finished services. Coin self- laundries are much more expensive than they are at home. Ah, yes .. bring a face cloth, bar soap and shampoo! Towels are supplied in hotels, but a face cloth is not, and the little bars of soap and little bottles of shampoo we are accustomed to in hotels at home may or may not be supplied. Film, photoprocessing, even same day service are readily available at comparable prices to Canadian. But .. if you are shooting video .. bring enough tape...

The weather in May was very changeable. Early in May there was snow in Monchique (the mountains above the coast) for the first time ever. The following week, I am told it was quite wet. We went the third week in May and had 2 afternoons of rain but it was still quite warm. I preferred this as I don't like the heat. I found the cool breezes and occasional clouds quite nice. In summer, it can be quite warm - around the mid 30'sC. The ocean is the Atlantic (the Mediterranean doesn't start until Gibralter) and can be cool. Praia da Oura has an international medical centre on site so this is the best place to go if you are unwell. If you are from the UK, don't forget your E111 form. We stayed in an apartment but there were campsites in the area.

Good avdice, buy your films at home! There wasn't plenty of choice in the photo-shops i went to, so the result is that half of my pictures have this really weird colors, which is a real pitty :(

Bring good shoes.

If you are planning exploring on foot, (and really is there any other way?),bring good shoes. There are hills everywhere and you can walk uphill for miles I am sure.
