Here's how Curral das Freiras, an isolated village in a valley surrounded by high peaks, got its name of "The Nun's Valley":
in 1566 the nuns of Santa Clara - a convent in Funchal - saw French pirates heading straight to their convent. The pirates had already killed a fair number of prominent island inhabitants and continued their raids and rapes. The nuns had reasons to be frightened. They could escape over the Socorridos river and hided in the remote valley in the interior. Since then the place is called 'Curral das Freiras' which literally means 'nun's refuge'.

    Inside the church

The church of Curral das Freiras is pretty nice. It's a modern church but the inside is worth seeing.
