Curral das Freiras Things to Do

  • The Nun's Valley

Here's how Curral das Freiras, an isolated village in a valley surrounded by high peaks, got its name of "The Nun's Valley":in 1566 the nuns of Santa Clara - a convent in Funchal - saw French pirates heading straight to their convent. The pirates had already killed a fair number of prominent island inhabitants and continued their raids and rapes....

Curral das Freiras Restaurants

  • Chestnut Cake

We tried the chestnut cake and whilst Ok I found it a bit dry - could have done with some cream! The portions where quite large and the best option would be to have two half portions - one of madeira cake and the other chestnut. - that seemed quite a popular choice. On the way out I sampled some of the local liquers made here:Chestnut - not quite...

  • Snack Bar

The village has many cafe and snack bars where you can sample various chestnut products - this is just one of them. It had a nice ope air terrace where you could sit and enjoy the view.

  • Nun's Valley

A local restaurant where you can eat a complete sweet chestnut menu. The area is full of chestnut trees, that's why chestnut is on the menu of the few restaurants. From starter over main course to dessert: sweet chestnut it is! We had chestnut soup. My husband had chestnut salad afterwards (I'd had the chestnuts already) and chestnut cake for...

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The main produce of Nun's Valley is the sweet chestnut. They have a yearly festival for it in November - we missed it by a week unfortunately. However chestnut soup, chestnut cake, chestnut liqueur, just about anything chestnut! can be sampled in many of the small cafes in the village.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When your physical condition is good you can make the hike from Eira do Serrado (1094 m alt.) down to Curral das Freiras. The hike will take about 2.5 hours on a partly rough/partly paved path along gorges and 52 (!) hairpin curves.
If you don't want to hike uphill for your return, you can take the bus. The bus stop is next to the church (bus no. 81).

  • The old path

Today there is a tunnel being drilled at the bottom of the valley to improve access and commuting times for the locals. The present journey can take an hour from Funchal and many commute there with their produce to the market each day.On the way down the mountain road from Eagles Nest you may spot this grassy zig-zag path - the way the nuns first...

  • The only road

Located just 19km from Funchal is the almost hidden valley of Curral das Freiras - the Nun's Valley. There is only one road into the Valley of the Nuns - the road no. EN 107 and you will need a head for heights as you wind around the narrow mountain road.

  • Local View

The market - what we saw of it - was a simple affair. Produce was being sold from the back of vans rather than out in the open on stalls. Some of the local houses were quite colourful too.
