Gloria Latina: Latin Music
A great place to be if you like the latin rythms. You can dance or you can comfortably be seated in one of the two terraces listening to the music. They also have a resident band that plays during the weekend
I went there several times during weekends for several reasons, the DJ is a friend of mine, I liked the music and since there's many foreigners that go there the crowd was really cool
Prince Albert Pub: Want a pint?
The island is not short of bars, pubs, clubs and live music. Funchal, capital of the island, is the place where all the action is concentrated and there are several pubs in the Casino area, especially in the Imperatriz Dona Amélia Street worth a visit. One of them is The Prince Albert Pub, a typical English pub with snooker.
I used to go there to watch the football games during the EuroCup2004 in June because there are two big screens, one in each of the rooms and I could be seated watching it while tasting a pint of beer.
Joe's bar: Best cocktails in town
Joe's bar is between Funchal and Reids hotel, part of the Quinta da Penha da Franca hotel.
They make the most delicious cocktails, and if the bar is not to busy will take some time to sculpt a sailing boat to decorate your glass. My favourite cocktail bar in Funchal.
After drinks you can always have dinner upstairs on the terrace - the steaks are very good.
Dress Code: smart casual
Café Teatro: Night starter
The "Café Teatro" is a must in the night scene of Funchal. It's an open space with a very nice decoration.
In the first month I used to go to this place every weekend, however, after I've made some friends I stopped to go there just because they showed some other places. Cafe Teatro in fact is where everyone is going to show the new dress or shirt....
Vespas: The “cathedral” of the Madeiran night
Vespas, the “ex-libris” of Funchal, is known as the “cathedral” of the Madeiran night. It usually opens at midnight and goes until 6am or 7am. The music here is more on the underground scene, with strong beats and lots for young people.
The right time to go to Vespas is around 5AM so I've been there only for a couple of times. I think the space is too big for the crowd in a normal day... however sometimes they organize parties and when that happens it gets really busy
Molhe: Dance or listen to disco music
Located on the liners Pier, in an old fort, it has a bar, disco, and an esplanade for those who don’t want to dance or listen to disco music. The only disadvantage is that you can only go up in an elevator with capacity for 12 persons. This doesn’t seem to be a problem until 1am, but after that get ready to join a long queue.
If you're lucky and it's full moon you can enjoy a great vue...
Tivoli Ocean Park Hotel - Lido Funchal: Musicial Show - 10 Euros entrance
Show starts at 9.00 and finishes about 10.30. It takes place in the Moonlight Bar in the Tivoli Ocean Park Hotel (downstairs from the main bar). The singers/dancers perform songs from musicals, etc. Entrance is Euro 10 per person. You can get tickets on the night at the Moonlight Bar. The show is on each Thursday.
Dress Code: Comfortable/casual wear, not shorts. Its a 5 star hotel.
The Awards Bar - Monumental Lido Hotel: Folklore Dancing, Hot Dancers, Magic Show, Singers
For anyone staying in Funchal, some of the hotels put on free shows for guests and some hotels are open to non-residents. The Monumental Lido Hotel (Estrada Monumental - in the centre of the hotel - tourist zone) has a nice bar area, comfortable seating. Most evenings there is a keyboard player, sometimes a singer (depending on the day of the week there are different people). Usually Tuesday to Sunday there is additional entertainment which starts at 10.15 pm. Tuesday folklore group, Wednesday and Sunday the Hot Dancers, Friday, a dance show, Saturday the magic show. The Hot Dancers, folklore and Magic shows are definitely worth going too. You can get to see a good show for the price of a drink. Opposite reception (on the wall the other side) is a board listing the entertainment for the week. If you are not staying in the Lido area you can get a bus from downtown, numbers 1, 2, 4 and 6, they stop outside the hotel on the way here.
Dress Code: No dress code, suggest not shorts for the evening.
Casino and Copacabana: play and party
Funchal has a very nice and very big Casino were it's very relaxed to have a small bet... It's also a nice place to sit and watch the people and then afterwards you can go downstairs and pary in the "Copacabana club"!
Café do teatro: If you are into fashion
This is a very, very nice place for people who like fashion. It's the place to be to watch people and to be seen! I can recommend this place to start your evening or when you want to impress a lady! ;)
Dress Code: No sneakers and I would recommend you to were a nice outfit
Entire area: The Old "Zone"
The Old Zone or The Old Town, as it is called, was the first nucleus to be built after the beginning of colonisation during the 15th century.
We liked to strowl through the narrow streets and still enjoy some of the old culture that's left in this particular part of town. Some of the old constructions still exist, some of which have been transformed into typical restaurants.
Further more you will find several nice places to go out at night. Besides that the large casino is nearby.

The beerhouse: Beer and chips
The Beer House is at the end of the Marina and easy to spot by its white peaked roof. From the terrace you can see the Marina and watch the lights of Funchal.
They brew their own beer which my husband enjoyed, and they also serve a decent glass of wine. This is a great place to sit with a drink and a basket or chips to watch the sun go down.
They do much more than chips of course. We popped in on a Sunday night and it was full of local families having an evening meal - always a good sign
Dress Code: very casual
Casino: Fancy your Chances?
Funchal is not big on discos and night clubs -its not that kind of resort - so the Casino is probably the best form of entertainment here. Apparently is not just for gambling your money away but there are also cabaret/floor shows to keep you occcupied.

Funchal bay: Funchal Fireworks
It's here on the Funchal bay where it's held the Festival do Atlantico ( Atlantic festival ). In this festival some countries from all over the world compete in a fireworks challenge held in the month of June.
Besides other entertainment during the week, the fireworks show happens every saturday until the end of the month. It's a great show that can be watched from any spot on Funchal where the bay is visible but the best place should be in the bay area since you can hear the music that complements the show.
Also, this is a litlle glimpse at the real fireworks show on the new years eve, probably one of the best in the world, since the fireworks are arranged in all the city, not only in the bay in order to give the best firework show anyone could ask.
This pics are taken from my bedroom and definetlly not the best spot, just to give you a notion.

FX: Good live music
Before living to Madeira I tried to identify the places where we could listen to live music and have a drink at night, and FX was one of the recommended places that I annotated.
In our first night some of us went early to bed, and a few other decided to walk a little before going to bed.
It was walking that we arrived to a small esplanade with live music, and decided to stop for the last drink.
It was a very amused time, in a lively ambiance, and only when leaving I tried to identify the place I discovered that I could check one item of my "must go" list.
Fernanda and other were absent, and we decided to return in one of the next nights. No way! The alternatives were much more than expected, and we went elsewhere.
