Wine Lodge Murals
Here's a closer view of one of the beautiful murals on the walls of the tasting room of the wine lodge. They were painted by Max Romer in 1922.

Some of the old doors in the old town retain their rustic charm - this was on one of the many restaurants in the old town - often specialising in seafood.
Old Town House
This shows you more detail of the old slum houses - hard to imagine a whole family living in just one room here .
Old Town Chapel
The tiny chapel in the heart of the old town - the Capelado Corpo Santo - is the 16th century fishermen's chapel. Their former boat yard near here was filled in to build the cable-car station :-S
Town Hall Courtyard
Whilst in the square have a peep into the courtyard of the town hall - there is a delightful figurine of Leda and the swan from 1880.
The town hall is an 18th century mansion that graces the wide own municipal square of Funchal. The black anfd white fish scale pattern of the ground was very eye-catching too.
In the town square is the Jesuit Chuch, founded in1574. With its lovely facade, decorated by figures of the saints, I thought it was more impressive looking than the Cathedral of Funchal.
Paved with decorous curves of black and white stones and bordered by whitewashed buildings outlined in dark basalt, it is an attractive place to sit and people watch.
What a lovely suprise seeing all the wonderful fruits and vegatables all laid out in this fabulous openair building, with its fish stalls below. Do try on the traditional wolly hats, they are a must.
A beautifull Marina, with boats from all over the world! You can see the mountains from the sea! Lovelly!
The gardens and Quintas
Funchal has many, many gardens, it was considered in the year 2000 the most green city of Europe! Plants from all over the world! Famouse botanical gardens! Don't miss them!
