The Bolo de Mel or Honey Cake is a typical Madeira cake. Ingredients: Wheat flour, sugar, sugar cane honey, pork fat, butter, mixed spices, nuts, almonds, raisins, and Madeira Wine (glad to know there's Madeira Wine here). For better taste the secret is to use your hands to slice it. If you use a knife, the cake will taste different. So, my suggestion is stick with your fingers and do not worry about the knife. :-) Another interesting characteristic is that the Bolo de Mel could be stored for several months !!! .... - Well... that depends. I must confess the one I was given last week (pictured here for this Tip) lasted just a couple hours in my hands. :-) Theme: Food and Drink

Picture from madeirashopping.pt by AnaMargarida Just 10 minutes from the city centre, you will find one of the biggest shopping centres on the island, a spacious complex with unique features and many fabulous offers. Consisting of 83 shops, Madeira Shopping has a leisure area with 20 restaurants, a nice terrace with sea view, 7 cinemas and Microlândia (bowling, virtual reality machines and mini golf). The good thing for tourists in Portugal when it comes to movies is that the original version of the films are shown with Portuguese subtitles, so you can understand what is happening on the screen. This shopping centre has 976 free parking spaces and provides complimentary busses that make their rounds according to a set schedule, passing at some of the hotels and public bus stops to collect those who want to visit the centre. Camacha, craftwork by sachara Camacha, a village in the mountains in the eastern part of Madeira, is known by its craftwork, made by willow basket makers. In Camacha they make almost everything of wicker, like baskets of all sizes and forms, but also furniture, kitchen utensiles, wine holders, hats. So if you need anything like this, it's the place to be. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft

Madeira wine got its special taste by chance and this happened in the old days when sea voyages were so long. Wein was sent to East India and because of pirates the ships had to return back home. At first they thought the wine was not drinkable after having crossed the Equator twice and being exposed to high temperatures . However, someone decided to taste the wine and they found out that it was excellent so what they did in those days was to send the wine on a long trip to the Equator and back to get that special flavour.(Torna Viagem ). In time it was discovered that through heating the wine barrel (Estufagem) the wine developed that special caramel aroma which gives it the unmistakable flavour of Madeira wine.
