Sao Vicente by sachara At the outskirts of the Sao Vicente village, directly next to the sea and the road along the north coast, is a big boulder in which the Sao Vicente chapel has been built. The chapel is just beside the bridge with four bows, so you can't miss it. The chapel is built in 1696. Here the women prayed, when their husbands and sons went out to sea for fishing. In the tiny interior in a niche of the altar you can find a statue of Vicente. Leave a Comment Directions: North of Sao Vicente near the bridge.

Faial by sachara Between Faial and Porto da Cruz lies the 594 high Eagle Rock or Penha de Aquia, high above the ocean, the plain and Faial. From Faial to Santana the road climbs a lot. At this road we stopped at the view points to look back. From here the views are the best. You can see the Eagle Rock, the river streaming to the ocean between the two mountains and the village San Roque do Faial at the mountainridge. At the background we saw also Ponta de Sao Lourenco in the far east. Leave a Comment

valley near Faial by sachara From the cool Ribeiro Frio at 860 M we drove to the north coast through the forest. At the small village Cruzinhas we reached the Amitade Valley and followed this valley to Cedro Gordo with its fruittrees and flowers and to Faial at the north coast. In Faial the three rivers Seca, Amitade and San Roque come together. Looking inland you see at the right side the nice terraces of the Seca Valley. At the left side Sao Roque do Faial at a mountainridge divides the ravines of the two rivers Amitade and San Roque. Leave a Comment Directions: North coast

by sachara Making a trip by car to the south-western part of the island, you can make two choices west of Ribeira Brava, or taking the higher road winding through the villages and valleys or taking the road down along the seashore. We drove both roads several times and each route has its own charm. When you take the road down just along the shore you pass a lot of tunnels, a few coastal villages, small rocky beaches and some waterfalls. At the end near Calheta you have to go uphill and will have a steep climb with a lot of hairpins and breathtaking views (see picture). At the top you can have a rest at the terrace of a cafe with a splendid view, looking where you came from. Leave a Comment Directions: South-west coast.

Porto Moniz, harbour by sachara Porto Moniz is situated at the most north-western tip of the Madeira island. For the coast the reefs in the lavarocks have formed a bizarre labyrinth of pools. The main attraction of Porto Moniz for most visitors are these natural bathing pools, filled by the tide with crystal-clear seawater. This piscina has a large terrace for sunbathing It's also nice to visit the harbour. In the harbour we saw a lot of small boats and a nice wallpainting. Leave a Comment Directions: North western tip of the island.

Santana by sachara Santana is a small village, laying at a 412 M high coastal plateau at the north coast. The village is known because of its little triangular thatched houses. The doors and the windows are colorfully painted. The first houses of this kind are built in the 17th century. They served for centuries as stables and dwellings for the local people. We saw, that houses, still neglected during our first visit, were restored a few years later. The governement encourages this restoration. The houses are inhabited again or sometimes used for tourism, like apartments or a shop. Leave a Comment Directions: North coast

Sao Vicente by sachara Sao Vicente is a village at the north coast, a bit retreated in the sheltering valley. In 1928 the village was partially buried by a landslide. Recently the village is awarded for the careful restoration of its facades. You can park you car just outside the village and enjoy a walk through the lovely streets with nice white buildings around the church. There are some cafes and shops. The interior of the church is richly painted. South of Sao Vicente near Pe de Passo we visited the interesting caves of volcanic origin. Leave a Comment Directions: Since the construction of the two lane motorway to Ribeira Brava at the south coast and the tunnel from Serra de Agua under the Encumeada pass to the north its a lot easier and faster to reach Sao Vicente from Funchal.

view from the Achada de Teixeira by sachara South of Santana we visited the area of Queimadas, where we made a very short walk along the scenic Levada do Caldeirao Verde, characterized by moss and heather trees. Because of the rain we did only a short walk and didn't make pictures, so we have to come back here some day. After passing the Pico das Pedras we reached the Achada de Teixeira. From here it is an one hour walk to the Pico Ruivo, the highest peak of the island. At Achada de Teixiera also ends the mountainwalk starting at the Pico do Arieiro. It was so cloudy that we didn't even had a glimpse of the peak. We only cilmbed the steps to the viewing point to take a picture and returned to Santana. Leave a Comment

Santana by sachara Strolling around in the village of Santana, we found a lot of houses with straw thatched roofs, not only the tiny triangular ones. Most houses have lovely gardens with a lot of flowering trees and flowers. The area around Santana is very fertile and used for agriculture. The embroidery of the region is very famous, because of its high quality and popular as souvenir. Leave a Comment
