Toboggan
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Ride of a lifetime and very scary, the world-famous carro de cesto street toboggans, this is a must do ride, they attract thousands of tourists every year who want to make this exciting experience of sliding at high speed on narrow, winding streets down to Funchal. These two-seater wicker sledges glide on wooden runners, skilled drivers will push and steer your wicker sled through the streets and down three miles of steep winding roads traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat, using their rubber-soled boots as brakes.
The downhill journey to Funchal is made in about 10 minutes on a total course of 3miles, reaching at times a speed of 48 km/hour. Adventurous, yet safe, an ‘old-fashioned’ toboggan ride to make your way down from Monte is the perfect contrast to the high-technology cable car going up to Monte. Don’t miss out on it! The cost is about €12

    hire a car
  • Tip Rating:
  • a car would definitely be the best way to get around the island, and to see all the wonderful things it has to offer. while there are tour buses around the place, i think to see the island in its entirity, and taking your own time, a car is the way to go.

the only problem is, joao hired a nissan micra, and we were 6!!! so us 4 girls were always squashed in the back, pretending to fart in each other's faces and whatnot. there were some crazy times in the back seat of that baby micra!

all you will need to hire a car is an international drivers licence. sadly, joao thought being madeiran by birth meant he didnt need one. so when the police pulled him over for too many people in a car without seat belts (blame me!) he also got in trouble for not having a valid international licence! so he gets a fine. what does joao do with the fine? he rips it up and says "i'm australian, they'll never bother to chase the money off me." to this day, he never did get in trouble for that! lol

    airlines into madeira
  • Tip Rating:
  • i would definitely recommend flying into madeira, so that you can at least stay for a few days to explore this wonderful island!

at the time i went, the airlines that serviced madeira were TAP & british airways. although i think air luxor now also does flights.

you can get direct flights to madeira from london heathrow, and of course, flights leave from lisbon as well. we found it cheaper to fly TAP from lisbon, but it did mean a long wait in lisbon airport.

from perth to madeira, stopping via singapore-london-lisbon, it took a total of 38 hours!! the longest flight i've ever made in the one hit, with noooo sleep!

    Aerobus
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is, besides taking a taxi, the most convienient way of getting from the airport to Funchal. Unfortunately it doesn't run very often, only about very two hours.
The fare is 4 EUR, free if you've got a TAP boarding pass.

    cruise holidays
  • Tip Rating:
  • many of the world's famous cruise ships stop in port at funchal, the capital of madeira. being the millenium 1999-2000 new year, the port was extra packed full of cruise boats, who had come into port to see the awesome fire works display that madeira hosts every year.

this one, the oriana, is a ship that sails the world. i've seen it many times in fremantle port. i personally am not a big cruise fan, simply because those people on the boat came on shore for 1 day! and madeira offers way more then a days worth of things to see and do! the people missed out on soooo much! but i suppose, if cruising is your thing, it might be worth taking one and getting to anchor in beautiful funchal's bay.

    airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • If landing in Madeira a few years ago was synonymous with 'dread' due to the size of the "mini" runway, nowadays you can sit relaxed while the pilot makes the final landing manoeuvres, due to a huge engenering construction. Madeira's new Intercontinental Airport, with a runway of 2.781 meters length, has given the Island a new image in this new millennium safe enough i assure yu,
still, hands clapping is always heard on the plane when the landing finishes...

Madeira's new Intercontinental Airport, with a runway of 2.781 meters length, has given the island a new image in this new millennium.
The new airport capacity is 3.5 million passengers/year and all classes of passenger aircraft are now able to land and take off from Madeira Airport.
This is one of the most ambitious constructions, especially if one considers the characteristics like 60 meters tall pillars that are also 60 meters deep under sea level.

    Boattrips
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the marina near the pier you can book several boattrips like half-day trips or full-day trips and cocktailcruises. On sea you have the opportunity to sea dolphins and turtles.
There are also deep sea fishing trips.

In the port, west of the marina, you can book a half-day trip with the Santa Maria, a tradional, newly built ship, like the one of Columbus.
In the port also leaves the ferry for Porto Santo.

All the times we came to Madeira island we hired a car.
The first time we came to Madeira, we had a pre-booked roundtrip with hotels at four different places at the island.
The other times we booked a fly-drive or a flight and a car at home, so we could pick up the car at the airport.
The bussystem at Madeira Island is also good and extensive, but many places we visited can't be reached by bus.
In Funchal it's also very easy to hire a car.
    There are many agencies.

    Picture:
On our first day ever at Madeira Island in 1996 we drove in the snow. It was the first and the last time.

    Organised Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • To see a lot of the island in a day there are several companies offering tours of the east, west and fishing villages of Madeira. Although there is a fair amount of travelling time involved you will see far more of the landscapes of Madeira than would be possible with the public transport schedules -so if limited for time and car hire is not an option this is a good alternative.

Be warned that many companies may look as if their tours are cheap - the price to pay is having to tour a timeshare complex!
One company who we found not linked to timeshare promotions and one of the few recognised by the governemnet are Strawberry world. We read good reports of them on the web before we arrived so we were delighted to find they had an office just below our hotel! They use mountain minibuses for their tours - so you will not be in huge groups. We took day trips to the east, west and Curral das Freiras as well as a guided levada walk with them. We had no complaints with their service, indeed they were friendly and knowledgable of the area, customs and flora.
