I went over on the ferry from Madeira - it leaves at around 8am, arrives around 10.30 to 11am.
The crossing was wonderful. I was sailing to a remote paradise. - which was slowly coming into view. The ferry was largely empty.
I have to say tho that on the way back - the crossing was very rough out in the middle between Porto Santo and Madeira. One has t rememebr that the sea is extremely deep around thi s part of the world. My stomach just about coped as the ferry bobbled, but it was a close run thing!
I would seriously consider the plane next time - small plane rides take only 15 minutes.
This ferry connects Madeira Island to Porto Santo. There are daily sailings (except tuesdays) to Porto Santo Island from Funchal harbour. The crossing time is around 2 hours and the ship can carry 1200 passengers and 160 vehicles.
We left at 8:00 am and the return trip was at 8:00 pm so that we could spend the whole day on the island.
We upgraded our ticket for 10 Euro and were able to travel 1st class and this included a breakfast buffet.
This trip takes about 2 3/4 hours. Very pleasant to travel on this very modern ship. You also see the coastline of Madeira which is very impressive
Porto Santo had an airport long before Madeira had one.
