From the beautiful and large place in front of the convent , The Santo Cristo procession starts the 5 week after Easter every year.
The convent , the church , the place and the streets are then illuminated by 180000 60 W light bulbs , mounted in beautiful decorations.
The streets are covered with flowers , carefully laid out in decorations, paintings. The main character of the festival is the statue of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres , which were given to the nuns by Pope Paul 3 in 1530. And of course there are fireworks and music in the street and large festivities as people come travelling from far away to partecipate.
Favorite thing: On the place in front of the convent , I spotted this tree which came from New Zeeland more than 200 years ago , today it has many babies around on the island. In New Zeeland it blooms around Christmas time , but here it blooms late in may, large red balls.
Favorite thing: San Miguel Island is full of flowers. This flower is the simbol of the island (at least I bought one of them for my refrigerator). Even: walls to separate the fields are not made of stones neither wood but plants and flowers
Favorite thing: The village Furnas lies 46 km from the Capital Ponta Delgada inside the Furnas vulcanic crater . The small lake in front is called "The Champagne Lake ", because vulcanic gasses make the water bubble just like Champagne.
Favorite thing: Ponta Delgada is the largest city on The Acores . My recomendation is to choose a hotel here and to take day trips around on the island , Hotel Atlantico Acores or Hotel Talisman are good choises .
Favorite thing: Close up of the Christmas tree . Doès anyone on New Zeeland recognise this tree that were taken away from you for more than 200 years ago ?
