The runner's paradise
Pinhal da Paz
Last time I've been to Açores Islands and because it was too hot that summer I was searching for a place to do my runs in a better environment. In my search I found what could be called the paradise for any runner. Only 7 Km from Ponta Delgada there is a space with pinetrees and some exotic plants.
One day in Pinhal da Paz
Right at the entrance there is a parking lot and one already can imagine whats inside and through the 15 Km of trails. There's also equipment to spend a nice day in the woods preparing a barbecue or any other meal. Thinking of children there is also a small recreational park.
This space opens to public from 08:00 til 19:00 during weekdays and from 10:00 til 20:00 during the weekend
Sao Miguel has quite rich fishing grounds and it´s quite a good place to go fishing.
You see quite a lot of people fishing off the coast there aswell as at the harbours in the towns.
I have mainly seen locals fishing there, but there should be no problems for visiting foreigners to join them.
Surfing is quite big on Sao Miguel.
You have both bodysurfers and windsurfers there, but the bodysurfers are probaply the most visible.
Sao Miguel has both very strong winds and quite big waves manking the conditions for both kinds of surfing good.
Take the hiking trail to Lagoa do Fogo.
From the little village "agua de alto" on the sothern part of the island you have a road leading towards Lagoa do Fogo.
After a couple of kilometers you can leave the paved road and take a little dirt trail the rest of the way to the crater rim of Lagoa do Fogo.
You have to go through a gate with a sign, but the sign only states that you can not take motorised vehichles through the gates, so you are welcome to go through as a hiker.
The whole hike takes around 3 hours if you are relatively fit and´getting down is a little faster, but not much as it is quite steep.
The view on the top is amazing and the hike itself goes through some fantastic nature too.
Equipment: Good hiking shoes/boots is a must and you should bring some waterproof clothes too as the weather can change very quickly there.

Spend a day hiking
Hiking at the steep hills near the village Faial da Terra was a great experience for me. It was about 7 km route and there was a stream with nice water falls. We also saw the abandoned village of Sanguinho up in the hills. The route comes back to the starting point and it's fairly easy for anyone who's done some excercising. Not for couch potatoes though!
Guided tours can be booked from Colegio 27, Rua Carvalho Araujo 27, Ponta Delgada. Info: +351 296 288 930. E-mail: email@example.com
Equipment: Hiking shoes, picnic lunch and something warm to drink (at least I felt it was quite chilly at the water fall).

Deep Sea Fishing
This island offers excellent opportunities for anyone interested in big game fishing, e.g. catching a swordfish, blue-fin tuna, marlin etc. The best season is from July to late October. Here is a link where you can make a boat reservation.
Golf on the green island
There are two golf courses on the S.Miguel island: the 18-hole Furnas golf course up on the hills and the 27-hole Batalha golf course near Ponta Delgada. You can read the details in the link I've provided, so I'm not repeating it here.
Whale & dolphin watching
They used to hunt whales with harpoons from these islands but now that old tradition has changed to hunting with cameras and binoculars. There are at least two towns where you can get on a boat to go whale watching: Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo. Some people saw a herd of seven whales while other people told us they didn't see any. So there's no guarantee that you'll actually see whales.
Prices per person are €47 from March to October and €40 from November to February. Swimming with dolphins is €63.
Departures at 8:45 and 12:45
You can book at your hotel or go to the marina.
Equipment: According to the weather of course. They give you overalls at the marina.
