    Farggi: Gelataria

    Farggi
    4 more images

We took a walk along the promenade of Portas do Mar when I suddenly spotted an ice cream shop. It was Farggi, a nice Spanish ice cream and fine pastries shop. Pleasant and attractive ambience, though the decoration very much reminded of Haagen-Dazs, another giant ice cream chain.

In addition to preparing high-quality ice creams, which are the result of the excellent ingredients they use and traditional preparation methods, Farggi offers a selection of other delicious products, from milkshakes, sorbets, crepes, waffles, cakes to coffee and chocolate.

Favorite Dish: Oh, it was so difficult to choose from so many interesting flavour combinations, such as coconut with ribbons of chocolate and pistachio bits, dulce de leche (sweet milk caramel), greek yoghurt, green tea with lemon sorbet, mango and raspberry sorbet, Swiss chocolate, Sicilian pistachio, turron, yoghurt with blackberries, yoghurt with peach and mango...

I had turrón, smooth and creamy ice cream featuring the authentic flavour of Jijona turrón (chunky almond nougat), and it tasted really good!!

Casa Marisca.: Brilliant seafood in a tiny place.

by cachaseiro Updated May 2, 2012

    Casa Marisca, Ponta Delgada.
    3 more images

Casa Marisca is a small restaurant in the eastern part of Ponta Delgada that does really good seafood and has friendly service and a nice atmosphere.
I have eaten there a couple of times and always been very happy with the good food and also with the very decent prices.
It´s a small local hangout where you don´t see amny tourists and it´s not the place if you like things to be flashy, but the kinda place if you like it to be authentic.
From the outside the place looks like something that might be closed, but once you are inside the place is really cosy and the service always very friendly.

Favorite Dish: I really like the fish called Abrotea.
It´s actually one of the cheaper things on the menu, but it has really tender meat and is absolutely fantastic.

Restaurant Barriga Cheia in Ponta Delgada.
    1 more image

Barriga Cheia means the full stomach and that is what you can get here for a very decent price.
It´s a little restaurant right in the center of Ponta Delgada that is very popular with the locals because of the decent food and the good prices.
I have been there a few times and always found it really friendly and welcoming.
And the food is good there.
You can get a main dish for 7-8 euros and mabye even cheaper than that if you chose one of the menus.

Favorite Dish: I almost always opt for the fish like i do in most portugese restaurants.
The local fish "abrotea" is my favotire.

Restaurante A Colmeia: Dinner with Fado

    by Avieira67 Updated Mar 20, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One good restaurant where you find The Traditional Azorean cuisine. Ambience and quality are excellent, but the quantity of food they serve, in my opinion, isn't enough for one person.
Every Saturday at 20:00 you can enjoy your meal while listening to the Fado.

Favorite Dish: Regional meat stew (alcatra de novilho) and tuna fish steak (lombo de atum no forno). For dessert, try Bean pudding (pudim de feijão).

Favorite Dish: I recommend you bife à corisco and bacalhau na chapa.

Restaurante Bar Aliança: Try the best steak of the municipality!

    by Avieira67 Updated May 19, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    4 more images

This is not a very special restaurant if we are talking about decoration, but they offer, definitively, the best steak of the Municipality.
Besides this dish, many other local dishes are available, such as pork dishes and seafood.
If you wish to try our regional wines, I advise Basalto or Frei Gigante wines, from Pico island.

Favorite Dish: The house steak, Bife à Aliança, is the great speciality of this restaurant. They make it in vinha d'alhos, a sauce made with garlic, local red wine and red pepper. It is served, usually, with fried potatoes, unless you wish salad and / or plain rice. A cheaper option, but not compared with the house steak, is normal steak, bitoque.
For dessert, I recommend you our pineapple produzed in greenhouses.

    Mimo: Good quality for cheap

    by Avieira67 Updated May 26, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    1 more image

Ambience isn't very special, but prices are cheap for the good food quality they offer. Tables are available both inside and outside the restaurant.
Menu is limited, but prices are from only 4€ (dishes of the day) to 14€ (restaurant beef steak).
Nowadays this restaurant serves italian food. I really don't know about the quality.

Favorite Dish: If you choose fish, I advise you grilled tuna; for meat, try the speciality of beef steak (bife à casa).

SP at the Sol-Mar mall: Inexpensive lunch

    Menu on the wall

This is a truly inexpensive local restaurant where you can have a full meal for 5 euros. Also drinks and karaoke singing. We heard a rumour about this place from other people who hd been and were happy to recommend it. So we had to see for ourselves.

Favorite Dish: Our meal of the day was fish soup (consisting of fish and potatoes) , then, a plate of chunks of fish on top of sliced potatoes with a big shrimp on top of the heap. Well, what can I say... they don't use much spices at this restaurant... he-he-he ... at least it was a warm meal and the coffee was hot.

Casa de Pasto O Avião: Try Tun Fish and Pork Chop

    by Avieira67 Updated Jun 15, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    3 more images

Located just one leg from the High School Antero do Quental, this was for long time a traditional Casa de Pasto.
The new room, located on the back, is like a normal restaurant. Also you have opportunity to taste a meal in a open space, like a small garden, at the back, or in the front of the building.
Food and service are reasonable according to price and conditions. They serve good portions, and they come with plain rice or fried potatoes and salad. Anyway, if you are looking for a good steak, I mean tender, this is not the right place.
Pork chops and baked tun fish (albacora assada) are good options.
At the past they had good home made desserts, including rice pudding and molotof.

Recentely I went twice for a dinner and, to be honest, I was a little bit disappointed last time. The baked meat, carne assada, was saulty. A friend of mine asked for dobrada com jardineira, but it was terribe, almost popatoes and oil and salty. The waiter, kindly, accepted my firend's ojection and suggested him another dish

This restaurant is closed on Sundays.

Favorite Dish: My favourite dishes are fried/baked tun fish and baked meat. For dessert, unfortunatelly, the home made desserts are no longer available. Try our regional pineapple.

    The marina

Meal of the day was just 5,25 (prato do dia). When I was there, it was lasagne. Very good and a big portion, too. Some other people had steaks and they were big and tasty and these people were happy enough to go there again to have some more steaks the next day.

Restaurante Sao Pedro.: Cosy restaurant with good food.

by cachaseiro Written May 1, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Restaurante Sao Pedro in Ponta Delgada.

Restaurante Sao Pedro is a small restaurant right next to the church with the same name.
It´s a cosy little place with a homey atmosphere and very friendly waiting staff.
I have eaten there a few times and the food is quite good.
The dishes are typically azoran and there is a lot of fish on the menu, but they have some nice beef dishes too that i have tried.
The place can be quite busy so it can be a good idea to reserve a table as the place is often full.

Favorite Dish: Personally i think they do a really good swordfish at the Sao Pedro restaurant.
Swordfish is called "espadarte" in portugese by the way.

Mariserra: Freshest Seafood from the Atlantic

    by Katya42 Written Mar 7, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Mariserra serves fantastic fresh fish, all grilled, and their desserts are exceptional as well. They are located a bit out of the way, a good hour's hike from the center of Ponta Delgada or a ten-minute taxi ride, but it's well worth the fare, because the fish is delicious and the views are amazing - you are seated right above the beach and can watch the ocean waves break while you work on your shrimp and pineapple salad.
