    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Unfortunatelly there is no a public transportation linking Ponta Delgada to the airport. Nowadays, there is a shuttle bus provided by UTC company.
Anyway, if you go as far as the old airport building (1km away) you will find a bus stop. From this point to the city centre is 3 km. Besides local buses, line A minibus has a regular service, from 07:30 to 19:30, on weekdays. It is the cheapest way to reach the city centre and costs only 50 EUR cents.

    Carridge rides

by kaloz Written Feb 17, 2015

One thing about ports, they are always at sea level and you frequently have to venture uphill. The good news is that in the morning you are fresh, and in the afternoon when you are worn out, the going is all downhill. If you wish you can hire a carridge to show you the sights of Ponta Delgada at a cost, of course. Me, I like to stretch my legs, but we did see some people enjoying this stately form of transportation.

    Trans-Atlantic Cruise

by kaloz Written Feb 17, 2015

My sister, Peggy, calls me up wanting to know the best way to get to Paris France. I tell her the best way is to take a trans-Atlantic cruise to Barcelona and to take the TGV, high speed rail to Paris. So here we are in our first port of call, Ponta Delgada, Azores (Açores) which are part of Portugal. the crossing has been wonderful with Celia making friends with the other youngsters on their spring break, swimming every day and having a wonderful time. I am a big fan of ocean crossings on a cruise ship, they are relaxing, there is virtually no lag from time changes, and there are plenty of diversions aboard ship, including a daily bridge game.

Taxi: Ponta Delgada - Vila Franca do Campo

    by SWFC_Fan Written Sep 21, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

During our stay in Ponta Delgada in September 2014, we were keen to visit the town of Vila Franca do Campo (where we could catch a boat across to Ilhéu de Vila Franca to snorkel).

It was a Sunday afternoon and we had just missed the 12:30pm bus which, according to the locals that we asked, would have taken us to Vila Franca do Campo (via Caloura) in around 50 minutes.

We didn't have much time, and the buses were infrequent, so we decided to take a taxi instead.

Vila Franca do Campo is around 30km to the east of Ponta Delgada, so we expected the taxi to be considerably more expensive than the bus.

We had seen taxis parked up around the edge of Praça Gonçalo Velho (in front of Ponta Delgada's city gates), so we made our way there. We found a taxi parked up on the corner of Avenida Infante Dom Henrique (in front of Santander bank, next to the Tourist Office) and asked the driver what the fare to Vila Franca do Campo would be. He told us that it is a set fare of €20 each way; the taxis are not metered.

The journey to Vila Franca do Campo took around 20 minutes. At our request, the driver dropped us off at the marina from where we would catch the boat to Ilhéu de Vila Franca. As we got out of the car, the driver gave us his contact card and asked us to phone him if we required a taxi back to Ponta Delgada later in the day.

We did require a taxi back to Ponta Delgada later that afternoon, but it was easier just to get into a waiting taxi in the centre of the town. We found a row of taxis parked up on Rua Dr. Urbano de Mendonça Dias, opposite Sao Miguel Arcanjo Church.

We asked the driver what the fare to Ponta Delgada would be and he too told us that it is a €20 set fare. The journey back to our hotel (Hotel Ponta Delgada on the western edge of Ponta Delgada) took a little over 20 minutes.

    Aerobus (Airport - Ponta Delgada)

    by SWFC_Fan Written Sep 20, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

During our visit to Sao Miguel island in September 2014 we used the aerobus service to travel between Ponta Delgada airport and our hotel in Ponta Delgada.

The airport is located on the western edge of Ponta Delgada and is just a 5 minute drive from the centre of town.

We had read that a taxi from the airport to Ponta Delgada would cost a set fare of €10 each way, so the aerobus, at €5 per person return, was better value for the two of us.

The aerobus, a bright orange, modern minibus, is operated by UTC Tours and tickets can be purchased from their office inside the airport arrivals hall. The lady who served us was very helpful, furnishing us with all the necessary maps and information that we required. She also arranged our pick up for our return journey to the airport at the end of our stay.

Our flight back to Lisbon departed at 8:25am on a Wednesday morning, so we were advised that a 6:40am pick up at our hotel (Hotel Ponta Delgada; a 5 minute drive from the airport) would be sufficient. The minibus picked us up right on time and we arrived in ample time to check in for our flight.

The aerobus is quite small. There is a luggage storage area at the back of the bus and seating for just 12 passengers. This wasn't a problem; there were only 8 of us on the outbound journey and 6 of us on the return journey.

The aerobus offers a door-to-door service, calling at all the major hotels in Ponta Delgada as well as the tourist office.
