There are several possibilities to get from Ponta Delgada to Santa Maria. I bought a ticket for a ferry boat (it leaves Ponta Delgada on Friday at 18:30 with the arrival at 22:00 and Wednesday at 9:00 with the arrival at 11:15; it leaves Santa Maria Wednesday at 18:00 with the arrival at 20:15 and Sunday at 12:00 with the arrival at 15:30; a return ticket costed 56€).
But upon weather forecast it seemed to be rainy on both days of my planned trip to Santa Maria, so I decided to change my plan and rather go three days later when it said to be very sunny. Unfortunately there was no ferry boat at that day. I had to return the ferry boat ticket and bought a flight ticket instead.
SATA Air Açores has the most flights between Ponta Delgada and Santa Maria. I took a flight from Ponta Delgada at 6:30 with the arrival at 7:00, and returned with a flight leaving Santa Maria at 19:50 with the arrival at 20:20. But in fact, the flight only takes about 20 minutes.
The third option to travel to Santa Maria is by boat for transporting goods. It leaves ponta Delgada on Monday and Wednesday at 18:00 and return from Santa Maria on Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00. The journey takes 6 hours and the price of return ticket was 35€ + 6€ for insurance.

The distance between Portugal mainland (Lisbon) and island of São Miguel (Ponta Delgada) is about 1.450 km. Two airlines have flights from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada, TAP Portugal and SATA Air Açores. I found a better deal with TAP so I booked a flight with them. It was a morning flight, with departure from Lisbon at 9:00am and arrival to Ponta Delgada at 10:30am.
I returned to Lisbon also with a morning flight, with departure at 8:30am and arrival to Lisbon at 11:35am. The flight was operated by SATA. There is an hour difference between the two towns so flights actually take a little over two hours. A return ticket was 196€.
At the airport in Ponta Delgada my dear friend António was waiting for me with the car and brought me to his home - which also became my home for the next 10 days :)

Unfortunatelly there is no bus service linking Ponta Delgada to the airport.
Anyway, if you go as far as the old airport (1km away) you will find a bus stop. Besides local buses, line B minibus has a regular service during the day on weekdays and is the cheapest way, only 25 EUR cents.
Tickets are bought on the bus!
Taxis in Ponta Delgada are very honest and straight forward.
In most places around the world, taxis is something that you need to be a little vary about if you do not want to get ripped off, but in Ponta Delgada you are fine as they are few and they are very organised and honest.
The taxis are mostly not cruising around for passengers like you see in many other countries, but they tend to be waiting at the taxi stands and then you either have to go there to get a ride or call them.
If you are in a hotel or a restaurant then just let them call them and everything will be smooth.
There is a shuttle bus linking the airport to downtown. This bus departes from the airport about 20 minutes after the arrival of the airplanes and is availabe from the 1st to the last flight.
Há um serviço de autocarro que liga o aeroporto à baixa. Este autocarro parte do aeroporto cerca de 20 minutos após a chegada dos aviões e encontra-se disponível do 1º ao último voo.
