This February we spent a week on Sao Jorge and a week on Sao Miguel (see my pages for the individual islands for more details). Both islands have abundant well marked hiking trails. Maps of the trails are available at the Government Tourist Office on each island. On Sao Jorge we used a taxi to drop us off at the trailhead(s) and pick us up later at a designated time and location. I guess there are quite a few hikers in the summer months, but in February we saw almost no other tourists on Sao Jorge... absolutely stunning landscapes. The weather was mild, 50's - 60's F. Sao Miguel is more populated & has bus service that can get you to most of the trails. Food and lodging are reasonable, the people are wonderful, and the pace is relaxed. We look forward to visiting some of the other islands too.
You should always have some rain gear (these are islands and the weather can change in an instant). Decent hiking shoes (some descents are a bit steep and rocky) and a hiking staff or pole. Most of the trails can be done in less than 4 hours but you'll need to carry food and water with you, there is pretty much nothing but nature along the way though a few hikes culminate in little towns where you can get a drink/coffee/a sandwich, etc. Theme: HikingAddress: AzoresDirections: Each island has a tourist office that can provide trail maps, information on bus and taxis, etc. See my pages for São Jorge and São Miguel for tips, details, and more photos.
