hiking paradise
This February we spent a week on Sao Jorge and a week on Sao Miguel (see my pages for the individual islands for more details). Both islands have abundant well marked hiking trails. Maps of the trails are available at the Government Tourist Office on each island. On Sao Jorge we used a taxi to drop us off at the trailhead(s) and pick us up later at a designated time and location. I guess there are quite a few hikers in the summer months, but in February we saw almost no other tourists on Sao Jorge... absolutely stunning landscapes. The weather was mild, 50's - 60's F. Sao Miguel is more populated & has bus service that can get you to most of the trails. Food and lodging are reasonable, the people are wonderful, and the pace is relaxed.
