Visit lagoons and enjoy wonderful views

by Arimateia Written Jun 7, 2012

São Miguel comprises six volcanic zones, all are Quaternary in age except the last, which is partly Pliocene. From west to east these zones are: the trachyte stratovolcano of the Sete Cidades Massif; a field of alkali-basalt cinder cones and lava flows with minor trachyte; the trachyte stratovolcano of the Água de Pau Massif; a field of alkali-basalt cinder cones and lava flows with minor trachyte and tristanite; the trachyte stratovolcano of Furnas; and the Nordeste shield, which includes the Povoação caldera and consists of alkali basalt, tristanite and trachyte. Dormancy ages for these regions include: 400 year for Sete Cidades, 145 for zone 2, 1150 for Água de Pau, and 370 for Furnas, while eruptions in the Nordeste have not occurred in the past 3000 years.

Lagoa das sete cidades consists of two ecologically-different small-lakes connected by a narrow passage (and crossed by a bridge), located inside a dormant volcano on the western third of the island of São Miguel. The Lagoa das Sete Cidades part of a natural landscape of communitarian interest: it is the largest body of water in the region and one of the most important freshwater resources in the archipelago.

Visit Furnas and eat a cozido

by Arimateia Written Jun 7, 2012

São Miguel Island, has been nicknamed "The Green Island". It is the largest and most populous island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Furnas is located in the easternmost of three active trachytic volcanoes on the island of São Miguel.
If you visit Furnas you must try the famous "cozido", a typical portuguese dish boiled under the earth. The cooking happens naturally due to the heat released by volcanic activity that exists within the earth. It takes about seven hours until all the meat and vegetables are well cooked

  • Dolphin watching

by manderleygirl Written Sep 23, 2009

There are several companies that provide raft-like boats to go whale and dolphin watching. You should be refunded if you encounter neither, so don't forget to enquire after that (dolphins are usually spotted and are friendly - ie, they get near the boat while it is moving in high speed - but whales are difficult to see from PD. Saint Jorge is usually the best island to see them.) I paid about 40 euros for a 2 to 3 hour boat tour - saw lots of dolphins and a portuguese Man o' War, but no whales... it was great, none the less... not very good for those who get sea-sick, though...

In Porto Formoso there is the sole plantation of tea in Europe. Worth visit. They show you the plantation and the factory. In the end you can have some tea in the saloon. It is a refurbished old factory: interesting!

Located in the west of the island. It is a group of 3 lakes. I was not lucky with the weather ... imagine this with sun!!!
There is a history about the blue and the green lakes: it is said that a princess with blue eyes felt in love with a shepherd with green eyes. The king did not allow them to marry and they cried so much that from the princess tears was the Blue Lake and from the shepherd eyes the Green Lake. Today you can not see the difference of the two colours in the lakes because lots of plants that grew in the botton of both lakes

    Natural swiming pools

People in Azores call this a "natural swiming pool". There are some stairs built in the sea and everybody go there for a swim. And they swim all year long: summer and also winter. The sea is not that cold. I loved the temperature of the water here

    Gin And Tonics.

    by Red_fish Written Mar 25, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Faial provides three unbeatable "must do's":
the view of Pico Island, the Capelinhos Vulcano, and Peter's Café Sport Gin And tonics.
So: go in the afternoon to see the vulcano, return to the city of Horta, ask for a Gin and tonics at Peter's and seat outside watching Pico fading away with the end of the day.
    Outstanding.

    Pico is always there.

From the Capital Ponta Delgada we went on Dolphin and Whale safari in small fast rubber boat. We were lucky enough to see hundreds of Dolphins on close range , playing around the boat . We also saw two large Ocean Turtles and lots of seabirds , but no whales this time , however the guide said he`s seen ten three days ago.

    WICH ISLANDS?

by mcb Updated Apr 24, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    I'll recommend four islands...
    1- Sº Miguel
    2 - Faial
    3 - Pico
    4 - Terceira
but you have 5 more to visit - Sta Maria, Graciosa, Sº Jorge, Flores and Corvo.
Sº Miguel is the most tourist and perhaps the most beautiful...but faial have a lot to see too, I don't know, pick the four.
