Dolphin watching

by manderleygirl

There are several companies that provide raft-like boats to go whale and dolphin watching. You should be refunded if you encounter neither, so don't forget to enquire after that (dolphins are usually spotted and are friendly - ie, they get near the boat while it is moving in high speed - but whales are difficult to see from PD. Saint Jorge is usually the best island to see them.) I paid about 40 euros for a 2 to 3 hour boat tour - saw lots of dolphins and a portuguese Man o' War, but no whales... it was great, none the less... not very good for those who get sea-sick, though...

Porto Formoso

In Porto Formoso there is the sole plantation of tea in Europe. Worth visit. They show you the plantation and the factory. In the end you can have some tea in the saloon. It is a refurbished old factory: interesting!

Sete Cidades

by pginer

Located in the west of the island. It is a group of 3 lakes. I was not lucky with the weather ... imagine this with sun!!! There is a history about the blue and the green lakes: it is said that a princess with blue eyes felt in love with a shepherd with green eyes. The king did not allow them to marry and they cried so much that from the princess tears was the Blue Lake and from the shepherd eyes the Green Lake. Today you can not see the difference of the two colours in the lakes because lots of plants that grew in the botton of both lakes

Natural swiming pools

by pginer

People in Azores call this a "natural swiming pool". There are some stairs built in the sea and everybody go there for a swim. And they swim all year long: summer and also winter. The sea is not that cold. I loved the temperature of the water here

Gin And Tonics.

by Red_fish

Faial provides three unbeatable "must do's": the view of Pico Island, the Capelinhos Vulcano, and Peter's Café Sport Gin And tonics. So: go in the afternoon to see the vulcano, return to the city of Horta, ask for a Gin and tonics at Peter's and seat outside watching Pico fading away with the end of the day.Outstanding.

Dolphin and whale watching

by F.Lade

From the Capital Ponta Delgada we went on Dolphin and Whale safari in small fast rubber boat. We were lucky enough to see hundreds of Dolphins on close range , playing around the boat . We also saw two large Ocean Turtles and lots of seabirds , but no whales this time , however the guide said he`s seen ten three days ago.

Spa bath

by F.Lade

In the town Furnas 45 km from Ponta Delgada , we found this wonderful Spa bath , with vulcanic heated water , very rich on Iron and minerals . It is said that everyone who baths in this place will become 20 years younger. Here you will find a luxcery Spa hotel , founded by the American Viceconsul and buisnesman Thomas Hickling (1745-1834 )

Portas da Cidade

by F.Lade

The place with the statue and the city gate is called Praca Goncalo Velho Cabral after the islands first Governor and discoverer of the island. If you ever should walk through the city gates , Portas da Cidade , your in good company . All Royal and prominent persons start their visit in Ponta Delgada by walking through theese gates , from Dom Pedro 4 and Dom Carlos to Soares.

by mcb

I'll recommend four islands...1- Sº Miguel2 - Faial3 - Pico4 - Terceirabut you have 5 more to visit - Sta Maria, Graciosa, Sº Jorge, Flores and Corvo.Sº Miguel is the most tourist and perhaps the most beautiful...but faial have a lot to see too, I don't know, pick the four.
