There are three gate ways in the Azores: Ponta Delgada, Terceira (Lajes) and Horta.
When in Faial, you can explore the nearby islands of Pico and São Jorge by boat all year round.

To go from one island to another, the plane is almost always the best option. SATA also provides the flights that connect all the 9 islands.

The Polar Star is an old icebreaker converted to expedition cruising. It takes a maximum of 100 passengers on a 7-night cruise. Shore excursions are included in the price. We traveled at night and went ashore during the day-- by Zodiac if we couldn't tie up at a dock. (We were unable to visit several of the islands due to wind conditions.) Land excursions were varied--walking tour of a city or bus tours around an island. Sometimes zodiac rides along a shoreline to see birds.
We started and finished in Ponta Delgada. For someone who wants to see all (or most) of the islands and doesn't want to deal with a lot of separate reservations and car rentals, this is a good alternative. Leave a Comment
