Polar Star

by JessieLang

The Polar Star is an old icebreaker converted to expedition cruising. It takes a maximum of 100 passengers on a 7-night cruise. Shore excursions are included in the price. We traveled at night and went ashore during the day-- by Zodiac if we couldn't tie up at a dock. (We were unable to visit several of the islands due to wind conditions.) Land excursions were varied--walking tour of a city or bus tours around an island. Sometimes zodiac rides along a shoreline to see birds. We started and finished in Ponta Delgada. For someone who wants to see all (or most) of the islands and doesn't want to deal with a lot of separate reservations and car rentals, this is a good alternative.

Taxi's are a great way to get around

by haikutaxi

Yes, we could have rented a car, but we were going to spend most of our time hiking & it's very convenient to have someone drop you off at the beginning of a trail and pick you up at the other end. The roads are narrow and twisting, some dirt and some paved, and to us it was a lot more relaxing to have someone who knows their way around at the wheel. Road hazards include horses, cows, donkeys, tractors and pedestrians... we let the taxi driver negotiate all of this while we sat back and enjoyed the ride. Our driver, Angelo Neto (Telefone 295 412403 or Telemóvel 966 780173) was outstanding. Angelo knew where everything was, seemed to know everyone (grew up on the island, spent some years in California and then returned) spoke English (sort of), and was incredibly dependable. He even was able to help us track down Susan's long-lost cousin in Santo Antão! The tourist office in Velas has a...

car is the best way to see the island

by zdemelo

Car or scooter rental is the best way to see all the sights on the island. However, bus tours are also offered.Driving is easy on faial, the roads are all newly paved an only one set of lights on the island.

Travelling to and in Azores

by Avieira67

If you consider to visit these Islands, I advise you to buy a ticket including regional connections. Using this way, along with connections by boat, you can explore easily almost all the azorean islands. There are three gate ways in the Azores: Ponta Delgada, Terceira (Lajes) and Horta. When in Faial, you can explore the nearby islands of Pico and São Jorge by boat all year round. In summer you have more possibilities due to the ferry service connecting almost all Islands.

Airplane to get there and from island to island

by Joao_Lourenco

SATA flies from Lisbon, Porto, Funchal, and other european cities to Ponta Delgada, Azores capital. The flight from Lisbon takes about 2:15hTo go from one island to another, the plane is almost always the best option. SATA also provides the flights that connect all the 9 islands. If you want to go from Portugal to Terceira or Faial, then TAP Air Portugal operates those direct flights from Lisbon.

Local Bus Service

by islandgirl14

Depending on the island you are on the local bus service can be quite good, runs at regularly scheduled intervals, with fewer runs on Sundays or holidays.

Fly from Terceira to Sao Jorge

Airports are modern and well staffed, planes leave on time & are reasonably priced.
