Vila Franca do Campo Things to Do

  • Snorkelling at Ilhéu de Vila Franca

We were keen to snorkel during our visit to Sao Miguel island in September 2014. We weren't sure whether we'd get the opportunity, but we packed our snorkelling equipment just in case. After arriving on the island, we read that Ilhéu de Vila Franca was a good spot for snorkelling. This volcanic islet, located a short boat ride off the coast of the...

Vila Franca do Campo Restaurants

We ate lunch at Restaurante Cantinho da Vila on a Sunday afternoon during our visit to Vila Franca do Campo in September 2014.

This local restaurant is located on Rua dos Oleiros, just a few metres from Praça Bento Gois, in the centre of the town.

There is a bar area downstairs with a small adjacent dining area and a larger dining room upstairs. We made our way upstairs and found the dining room empty. A friendly waitress had followed us upstairs and she guided us back downstairs to the smaller dining area. There were a few men in the bar, awaiting the start of the live televised football game between Vitoria Guimaraes and FC Porto, otherwise it was a quiet Sunday afternoon.

The attentive waitress asked us if we would like the cover of soft cheese (queijo fresco: €2.50). It looked good, so we accepted it and ordered some bread to go with it; 2 large, puffy bread rolls (€0.60). The soft white cheese came drizzled with Pimenta Moida, a spicy local sauce made from red peppers.

We were only looking for a quick snack before heading back to Ponta Delgada, so we both ordered Bifana no Pao (€3.00 each). This popular local snack is effectively a pork steak sandwich. The pork had been cooked in spices and the sandwich also contained lettuce and tomatoes. I added some piri piri sauce to mine to give it more of a kick. The bread roll in which it was served was another of those large puffy ones – they are ideal as they aren't too stodgy or heavy. We both enjoyed our sandwiches. (I should confess that we both thought "bifana" was beef when we placed our order...and we both commented on how our "beef" looked more like pork!).

We shared a plate of french fries (€1.50).

To drink, I had a large local Especial Beer (€2.00) – a refreshing 5.3% lager – and Emma had a bottle of fresh lemonade (€1.00).

A basic local restaurant with tasty bifana (pork!) sandwiches.
