Pôr do Dol: Drivers Hunter

by solopes

Once upon a time, some guys decided to open a restaurant in the main road from Lisbon to Porto, in a empty section not far from Lisbon. It became a reference, because it was well located, the variety and quality were good, the service was quick as needed and the price acceptable. But one day the highway that stopped at Vila Franca de Xira was enlarged, with a new exit further north, in Aveiras. What to do? Of course, move to Aveiras. And there was born Por do Sol 2, with better parking and facilities.More years passed, the highway was finished, and business faded. The new solution? Yes, move to the highway. And that's why they opened I think that 5 restaurants in Portuguese highways (but not in Aveiras). The service is different, more adapted to the even quicker demands of the highways, but they keep being a good chance for those (like me) that won't surrender to fast-food. Of course,...

Gondomar is not exactly a touristy destination, unless you search for gold crafts manufacturing. I had never been there, and after a professional meeting had lunch at this restaurant. With pleasure. The food is "home made" type, with good presentation at a reasonable price. Rabanadas, for desert, at the topLombo de PorcoEmpadão de Atum

That one: Eating in Portugal

by solopes

Eating is the Portuguese's favorite sport. So, there are "stadiums" all over the country. Don't waste your time asking for the best cuisine - everybody will tell you that it their local cuisine. And they are being honest, each one prefers his own recipes. But, wherever you go, you may find some special menus, sometimes exclusively in that restaurant or region, and many of them drag thousands of visitors to... eat.So, being Portuguese, don't get surprised if I tell you that, after tasting dozens of different cuisines, I agree that the best one is... yes, Portuguese. I could tell you about lots of dishes, for instance bacalhau, cooked in 100 different ways (and one more, the one I tasted today at lunch). And Cozido a Portuguesa, and Leitao a Bairrada, and Cabrito, and cataplana of... and...Excuse-me, I have to stop, it's dinner time. But do come, and see for yourself. And believe me, if...

Pastries

by Balam

Many of Portugals lovely pastries were invented by Nuns during the 18th century. As times were hard the nuns made and sold them as a means of supplementing their income. Many pasteries still have interesting names like Toucinho do Céu (bacon from heaven) Barriga De Freira (nun's belly) and Papos De Anjo"(angel's chests) all assosiated with the Nuns whe created themA particularly delicious pastry and mine an my Mums favorite is "Pastéis de Nata," a small custard tart sprinkled with cinnamon i was shown how to make these by a Chef at The Pestana Alvor Pria Hotel were they make the best Pastéis de Nata i have tasted (up to now).08/12/09The Alvor Pria's Pastéis de Nata were the best untill i went to Belem during Euromeet 2009. we had the famous Pastéis de Belem and they were delicious.

Cheese

by Balam

Portuguese cheese is fantastic and varied, Queijo da Serra is a sheep cheese made in the Serra da Estrela region, Cabreiro is a a strong goat cheese while Queijo da Ilha which comes from the Azores is used grated and is very much like parmesan.Queijo da Serra has smooth consistency with a delicate flavour and is great with crusty bread.and on my lastest visit i brought quite a bit back among some other kinds.

Soup

by Balam

Soup is served at most meals in portugal and there are a great number of different varieties. the most famous is probably gaspacho which is a soup of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, garlic, chillies and vinegar. another popular and delicious soup is Caldeirada which is a fish soup made with, tomatoes, onions and garlic and other ingredients which traditionally will depend upon the area and on the fish available that day.In the North Seasonal vegetables as well as fish and meat are normaly used and another famous soup is caldo verde made with mashed potato, green cabbage, black pudding or slices of sausage, such as chouriço and salpicão with olive oil08/12/09During Euromeet 2009 i managed to take a photo of some soup (not the one i have used) which became a great laugh to other Vters that i actualy had a tip about Soup lol

really good coffee

by margaretvn

While walking to the Castelo de Sao Jorge we decided to stop for a coffee and a rest as we had walked for several hours. Quite by chance we found this lovely tiny little cafe and stepped into it. It was really small with just five tables but wonderful. We each had 2 coffees and a cake and a welcome rest....... all for 5 euros. we had a tasty little pastry called Pasteis de Nata which is a custard-cream tartlet and a lovely uma bica which is a strong black coffee - like an expresso.

A TASCA: PORTSIDE IN SAGRES

by DAO

Yes, this place is a little touristy and you could probably find a slightly cheaper restaurant. A Tasca is still worth a visit and a good meal. It literally sits right on top of the port and you can enjoy a great meal on their large terrace looking out towards the ocean. They serve seafood caught by local fishing boats and it’s all cooked or grilled to perfection. Some of the dishes are a bit of a mouthful like the giant prawns (shrimp) pictured. Their house wines are from the ‘DAO’ Region of Portugal, so it just cannot get any better. You receive good portions of great food at A Tasca. The service is slightly slow, but polite enough. In addition to many types of grilled fish, they also do smaller tapas dishes, squid kebabs and stews. Please note: They are open during the Winter, but closed on Wednesdays. I had the grilled sardines starter and was brought 5 large sardines marinated in...

Chicken Piri Piri

by Balam

You will find many fancy restaurants in Portugal that offer Great Seafood, fillet steaks and many many other great dishes but the finest meal on offer is certainly Frango (chicken) Piri Piri! although now classed as strictly a Portuguese dish the Portuguese and African origins are clearly seen in its names. Frango and cafreal (or cafrial) are Portuguese for chicken, and grilled; and piri-piri or peri-peri are the pan-African words for chile pepper. This dish evolved in Angola and Mozambique (once Portuguese colonies) after Portuguese explorers and settlers brought American chile peppers to Africa. The Portuguese also took the Chilies and the cafreal to other parts of the world, notably Goa, India were they replaced pepper in dishes and thereby making the curries we love.Hot Chicken Piri-Piri is now so popular in Portugal that it is regarded as a Portuguese dish. The secret behind this...
