Restaurante Encanada: Eating in Ponte de Lima

by jorgejuansanchez

Wonderful restaurant by the river Lima, in the historical side of this lovely town. You will not finish their dishes, being so generous. The rare parasite fish lamprea, called in Portuguese lampreia, is prepared for 23 euros. The owner has a magnificent hostel (Beds looking like belonging to French King Louis XVI) with especial prices for pilgrims making the Camino de Santiago. Lampreia

Marina: By the River Douro in Oporto

by jorgejuansanchez

You will not find a better view of the Douro River than from the terrace of this restaurant. Their speciality is tripas (tripes in English and mondongo in Spanish) prepared in a delicious form since the times of Henry the Navigator. People from Oporto are known as tripeiros because they prepare the tripes like no other place in the world. Order also fresh Vinho Verde for a unique culinary experience in Portugal. Tripas

by elmasri

In Lisbon it's difficult to have a favourite restaurant. I normally go to the small local restaurants where the food is excellent and cheaper. If you feel like splashing or flash your gold card then go to 'Gambrinos', just behind the Restauradores Plaza. One of the best places to eat fish and shellfish. Don't ask me the price, I was invited, but I can tell you it's one of the most expensive. One of those with 4 waiters hoovering behind your table, adding a drop of wine after you siped it from your glass... Can you believe I forgot the name of the street? It's almost in front of the Coliseu... shame on me... Anyway in that street you will find an array of restaurants all serving fish. 'Solmar' is another good one.Another good restaurant is the one inside the S. Jorge Castle, which was once owned by a well known portuguese Chef. God knows who owns it now.In the new redone 'Docks' in...

Clube de Fado: More than just Fado

by elmasri

The restaurante Clube de Fado is centrally located in Alfama, but better reached by the Lisbon Cathedral (Igreja da Sé). Although considered very touristic, this is actually a great place to first experiment the beautiful Fado being sung. The food is very good and the price reasonable for a place where you're getting to see a show. Book a table otherwise you end up eating upstairs and waiting till 11pm to get a table downstairs. But my experience was made even more memorable due to the amability of the host...Shame I do not have a pic. 'Pataniscas de bacalhau com arroz de feijão' and 'arroz de tamboril com gambas', both delicious. My firend had Cataplana de Peixe and she was amazed by the flavours.

Restaurante Chines Hong Fu: Let's Try Chinese

by Bwana_Brown

On our second night in Lamego, we had returned from a long day-trip to the 'Geraz do Minho' region in northern Portugal, almost to the border with Spain. After a pleasant stroll from our hotel down the steps of the famous 686 step double-staircase in Lamego, we turned to the right off off the treed esplanade onto a parallel street. It was here that we had earlier spotted a Chinese restaurant and decided to give it a try. Once again, at 7:30 PM, we were too early, having the place largely to ourselves. However, a very friendly young Chinese girl showed us to our table. Not surprisingly, she could only speak Chinese and Portugese, but the restaurant had a very good English menu as well as their usual one. We started with the obligatory beer and wine to go with our 'starter' of Roasted Almonds (E1.75). For main courses, Sue ordered Prawns with Mushrooms (E5) while I went for my old standby...

Hotel Rainha D. Amelia: First Class Dining

by Bwana_Brown

This had been another long day of driving north from Evora, taking in the hilltop fortifications of Monsaraz and Marvao on the way to our overnight stop in Castelo Branco. It was about 8 PM by the time we had settled in and changed into dinner clothes for a quick look at restaurants in the area. In the end, we decided to return to the hotel because their menu, which we had checked on the way out, looked to be the best of the lot.Upon our return, we were ushered into the hotel dining room and were completely looked after from that point on by their 'maitre d'hotel' in his very smart black suit with its traditional short jacket. He really did everything 'just so', and it was a pleasure to be served so professionally! For wine, I selected a half-bottle of Borba Alentejo 2002 Red, while Sue had a similar bottle of White wine. Our starter of black olives, cheese and a delicious walnut bread...

LISBON SEAFOOD

by TONY786

I stayed in Lisbon and visited a seafood restaurant full of locals there are many in the city you choose live lobster and squid or fish on ice they weigh and cook it on the flames there and then excellent wines but avoid the little starters that they throw at you at first hams and breads as the price soon adds up many types of fish that i have never seen, fresh sardines, large red king prawns on the shell, red snapper, octopus and squid

Papagaio da Serafina: Food in a park

by jorgejuansanchez

This restaurant is outside of Lisbon, over a hill with attractions for children, in the middle of a lovely park. The restaurant serves codfish and all kind of meats and good Portuguese wines at very interesting prices. You need a taxi to get there, but it is worth. If you go on Sunday, make a reservation beforehand. as above

Café Martinho da Arcada: Historical restaurant

by jorgejuansanchez

This lovely restaurant was immortalized by the poet Fernando Pessoa. You can have a cup of coffee and observe the place and the pictures of Fernando Pessoa since the times when it was an intellectual point where the writers and artists of Lisbon gathered. This Cafe and the “pasteis de Belem” close to the Monastery of Saint Jerome are two of the main musts in Lisbon. as above
