Chez Lapin: Ribeira area in Oporto

by jorgejuansanchez

This is a nice restaurant in the heart of the Ribeira area of Oporto. I suggest you to order Bacalhau assado no forno if you like fish, or the typical Oporto dish Tripas e cosido a portuguesa if you prefer meat (Oporto people are called tripeiros). see above

Evora - La Choupana

by ant1606

For a memorable dine-out experience we recommend "La Choupana" restaurant, just a few steps away from the main square, where we sat at the bar among locals to be served by a wit and efficient waiter. Certainly the best man in his position in the entire continent.Excellent grilled bacalhao, wild pig stew and a few appetizers produced no doubts about returning the next day.

O Tamanco, in Nazare: fresh fish in Nazare

by jorgejuansanchez

This is a cheap and good restaurant in downtown Nazare, by the beach. They are specialists in grills. Try fish, only fish, and good “vinho verde” very cold. Good appetite! I ordered several fish on the grill

Don't miss the the Gastronomy of Minho's region

by ncfg

I think where you eat better in Portugal is in the Minho region - north of Portugal. You will find several dishes of codfish, arroz de sarrabulho (a minced pork and pork blood dish), very good seafood if you are by the sea and lamprey or local sável (shad fish) in season if you are by the rivers.Great pastry and delicious green wine (Alvarinho, Loureiro ...)Don't miss!

Snack-Bar “ Bambi”: Don't Miss The Fresh Seafood in Quarteira

by ncfg

During our stay in Quarteira - Algarve we had almost of our lunches at the Snack-Bar “ Bambi”. After enjoying the beach in the morning, fresh and tasty seafood was served in this small restaurant not far from there. The owner of Bambi is a really friendly person and all the staff. And the prices were quite reasonable for the time of the year (mid July).

any small (not tourist-oriented) places: Seafood..Atlantic Coast

by Entropic

Skip the fancy-sounding dishes and get fish..or shrimp. The more plain the fish sounds like the better it will taste. Most delicious fish (swordfish) we got was in a small cafe right on the ocean in small fishing village (don't remember the name, we got lost and found it by chance)..it was $5 euros, big enough for two and SOO DELICOIUS.Also make sure you'll get VINHO VERDE with any fish dish..it goes down like gingerale but gets you nice and tipsy in the end.Best fish we've had was on the Atlantic Coast, from Algavre to Porto..going more inland the quality got much worse and meat got much better..

Tip Photo
Belem Pastelaria: Belem Pastelaria- NOT overrated

by Entropic

The place is probably the most famous cafe in Portugal. Therefore I expected it to be big on hype rather then taste. The lines are big even on weekday mornings.. but the pastries.. heavenly..perfect..nothing like I've ever tasted before..that's the best thing about Portugal, a lot of hyped-up tourist places actually ARE as good as described. pastriesnote: don't get more then you can eat that day (or preferably that afternoon)..i've seen people take several large boxes..after they cool down they are not as good, microwave only kills the crust and the next day they are just not good at all.

O Telheiro: Spectacular Views, Great Food

by Entropic

Located on one of the most gorgeous beaches in Portugal this restaurant doesn't need its food to be great. But surprisingly it is. Though the place itself is very simple, almost bordering on 'cheap looking' the views are amazing, especially as the sun sets over the lighthouse seen at a distance at the "end of the world". Service is great, at the end of the meal the owner of the restaurant came up and chatted with us about our experience in Portugal, local food and Port. We were there our last night in Portugal and it was the most wonderful end to the trip. Tiger Shrimp appetizer- expensive (~$20) but worth it. From wines, a glass of vintage Port.

Cozinha de Santo Humberto: Delicious Food, Great Place

by Entropic

We got the house special, lamb with potatoes and it really was the most delicious piece of lamb I've ever tasted (and living in NYC it's not a light thing to say). Everything delicious but not pretentious, it had a lingering taste of home-made food. Service is great and the restaurant itself is very authentic and tasteful. Lamb with Potatoes, Soups.
