Restaurante O Castelo: Homemade Piri Piri with a view

by Markyreid

The Restaurant is located just before the hillside town of Monchique, just above Caldas Monchique. The Chicken Piri Piri was sensational and considerably nicer then the same dish i had consumed the night earlier in the tourist strip in Albuferia. The cook is a local Portugal man who has married an American lady so they both speak English and Portugese. The food is traditional and a very reasonable price. The restaurant is for sale though, so it may change hands shortly. Monchique is famous for its Chicken Piri Piri and this restaurant helped maintain this belief. It also had a number of local home made desserts that are worth trying. THe food was all exceptionally priced.Chicken Piri Piri (1/2 chook) 5 euro

Navel: Cataplana

by Markyreid

I am pretty certain that this was the name of a restaurant we went to on the wharf in Faro. it is located on the very edge of the wharf and overlooks the muddy beaches near by. We had lunch here and did not require any dinner as the serves were huge. The Cataplana was very, very good. we shared it between the two of us and it was more than enough food. Cataplana is a local specialty and consist of shellfish and fish. It is presented in a similar dish to that of a paella. It has a nice sauce but it was lacking something to soak up the sauce, such as rice or noodles.

Cantinho da Pizza: Italian Night!

by Bwana_Brown

Praia de Mira was our first return to the Atlantic Ocean in almost a week, so, after finishing up on the beach, it was about 6 PM before we set off on our rounds about the small town to see what was available for restaurants. We found that many of the restaurants were closed on this Monday night in late May, probably because the tourist season had not really started up yet. Those that were open did not yet have many customers in them. Finally, on a tiny side street, we came across a simple little pizza joint that looked promising! When we entered the restaurant with its many tables spread out in front of the counter, only one table was already occupied - by the children of the owner, it seemed. It was a good sign because they were eating pizza! They shouted out in Portugese and their father was not long appearing from the kitchen with the menu.Sue ordered a Brazilian, while I ordered a...

be wary: Tourist Strip Cuisine in the Albuferia

by Markyreid

We ate out in the local strip for a number of meals and had a mixed experience. The food was generally good and at a reasonable price but it lacked the taste that the local food had in the surrounding towns. If you do not have transport then the tourist strip will suffice, but if you can get out to the local towns which are only 10-15 minutes away you will experience better food at a cheaper price. The image below is a kebab at one of the restaurants on the strip. All the serves were of a large size.

Portimao wharf: Sardines at Portimao

by Markyreid

We parked the car in the car park at the old wharf and wandered through the neighbouring streets. We found a small restaurant along the wharf (central square) where we had some fish soup and grilled sardines. The sardines were fantastic and the soup was great, if you like a strong fish flavour. The grilled sardines was enough for 2 and only cost 5 euros. Make sure you buy a ticket for the carpark, as we received a parking ticket but were lucky enough to see the parking inspector and explain that we did not know we had to pay. He was good about and through the fine away. When in the Algarve you need to try there grilled sardines.
