Wide range of items are available at Municipal Market in Cascais especially clothings and textiles, shoes, leather products such as travelling bags, belts and handbags, toys, household goods, CDs, DVDs and souvenirs.

Souvenitrs can be purchased quite cheaply from the Municipal Markets in Cascais.

Reasonable price, it has to be said.

There are beautiful things you can buy in Alentejo such as shepherd's art in wooden, cork and horn objects.
I spent one week in this fabulous region of Portugal and I had visited the beautiful small town Marv?o.
In the narrow streets and alleys of Marv?o you can find small traditional art shops.
They have crafts things hanged on the walls of the houses/shops, so you can easily identify them.
Well, i could not leave this beautiful small town without buy a souvenir.
So i entered in a local souvenir shop and i took a look around and i chose a little miniature of an Alentejo house and a beautiful cork object.

Like in other places I had been, I went to a souvenir shop to buy something to remember Madeira.

There are several cute things to buy in Madeira, I bought one azulejo (glazed tile) of a Santana's House and a woman dressed with the traditional costume. (Take a look to my Madeira page to see it)

Another souvenir that i bought in Madeira was these lovely things for the kitchen.
Take a look to the photo, how lovely are the pot holders (Thanks Mary ;-))
And the thing that is in the middle it is used to place the lighters and for decoration in the kitchen.

When visiting Portugal you can't miss the opportunity to taste and buy Porto sweet wine. You should avoid tourist shops and go to a wine cellar. You will probably get a better deal in wine cellars, regarding quality vs price (even though prices might tend to be high).

There are several makes, and some of them are equally good. As in any other wine, price and taste will depend on year, being that Vintage are more expensive.

I don't buy touristy things so I cannot give any advice about that, but some practical tips:
Supermarkets: I found Minipreco being cheapest, look for products with a brand name Dia with a red stripe, those are cheaper. Continente is cheap too and they have products with their own name "Continente", which are cheaper than known brands. There are markets for vegetable, fruit etc
You can find real bargain clothes . There are shops along the Praca da Figueira in Lisbon, at the markets (Alfama) and many other places where you can get good clothes for 5 Euro and shoes for 10. At Praca da Figueira I saw two shops , one of them is "Bulbul", that sell all clothes for 5 Euro and there was alot to chose from and it was good stuff too.
Port wine is a good buy to take home. There are many kinds of it and the prices vary depending on which year's stock it is.

Jorge Mendes, Lda.: Ceramics in Coimbra, Portugal

  • This shop has the highest quality ceramics I came across while in Portugal. There are two floors ~ some sale items downstairs ~ and it is filled with ceramics with a variety of traditional designs on them. They have everything from spoons to jars to wallhangings. . .even some larger pieces that were out of my range.

Had I known that I wouldn't encounter this quality of work again, I would have bought a bit more than I did.

It might not be the best shopping area for prices and selection, but Rua Augusta seems to be the preferred "strip" for locals and visitors who want to stroll around. This busy pedestrian street connects Praça Dom Pedro IV, also nicknamed Rossio, and Praça do Comercio. Here are some elegant stores but also a good number of bars and a few simple restaurants. The mosaic typical "calçada Portuguesa" pavement combines black and white stones to form nice patterns.

If you keep you eye out in many towns in Portugal, you will find one that sells the customary hand made azulejos (hand painted tiles) and ceramics. Each region has it’s own unique styling and variations. Most often the prices are very reasonable. These items make great gifts and souvenirs.

Any trip to Portugal should include Port wine tasting. This fluid is made from grapes growing in the vineyards of the Douro valley, the river being the natural waterway to move the raw material downstream to the estuary city of Porto. On the opposite bank of the Ribeira district are most of the major brand wineries and tours are organized for sampling and shopping.
Rather than here, I believe better prices can be found at specialty liquor stores carrying Port wine of any kind and aging.
