by tampa_shawn You can purchase Port just about anywhere. Since the bottles are heavy I would suggest buying the Port your planning on taking home at the end of your trip. The cheapest place to buy Port is in the stores the locals use, but since I hate carrying extra luggage so I often find it's worth paying an extra dollar or two to make my purchases in the airport shops. If you plan on doing this check your flight times first. The airport shops have limited hours. My flight left before the shops were open!
Port, like champagne, can only be legally produced in one region. For Port the region is the Douro River Valley in Portugal. Because of this the Port we drink in the US is all imported from Portugal. So buy it in Portugal and save some money! Port also makes a great gift. We found the Port we paid $40 for in the US was $6, YES SIX dollars in Portugal. When drinking Port remember that Brandy is added to the Port so it's much higher in Alcohol (and taste) than wine. The legend goes that at one time Port was carried out of the valley on donkeys. Brandy was added to keep the wine from turning into vinegar. I am not sure if the legend is true or not…. Pictured here in the foreground replicas of the boats that used to hall the Port, in the background the scenic city of El Porto

by tampa_shawn My favorite shopping destination was in a little traditional fishing village not far from Fatima. I totally loved this place, the food was wonderful and there were even people wearing the traditional dress of Portugal.
I’m not much of a shopper but I went wild here. The stores were filled with beautiful handmade reversible capes (1 bought one), great fishermen’s sweaters (I bought several…and am in fact wearing one as I write this), and some other wonderful sweaters (I bought several). I must say that the quality of these goods were superb and I still wish I had bought more!!! Everything I bought was 100% wool and was of surpurb quality. Warning – the sweaters I saw in major tourist centers were acrylic not wool and were not of the same quality I saw in the smaller towns.
I didn't find the prices a "deal" but the quality was so high that even after several years I still get compliments everytime I wear the cape and sweaters I bought here. I believe I spent $200 on the cape and $50 on the fishermens sweaters Leave a Comment Theme: Women's ClothesDirections: Pictured here is the costal town that I found many of my "finds".

The Quarteria Market by mrshlomi The markets are fantastic places to shop, ask at the hotel when the Gypsy Market in Quarteria runs, it was quite an experience and the fresh produce was fantastic, probably the best I have ever tasted. Be wary of the eggs though, its hard to find unfertilized eggs, which came as quite a supprise to us. For about 1 euro we bought a kilo of fresh strawberries, its fantastic!
Generally cheap, make sure to buy lots of oranges. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkDirections: Market in Quarteria (food one one side, items and clothing about a block down twice a week)

Rug in 2004 that I bought in 1964 by grandmaR I had read Emily Kimbrough's book about touring in Portugual, and I was anxious to see the things she wrote about. I even bought a rug (pictured) from the same lady that she did.
I went to the apartment of the lady mentioned in the book, and picked the design and size that I wanted. Then there were yarn samples so I picked out the colors that I wanted. They wove the rug and sent it to me. I don't have the address or name of the place, and I'm pretty sure that it no longer exists. Leave a Comment Theme: Home Furnishing

Daughter in Portuguese Outfit by grandmaR I bought the hat (which says Portugual) and the shorts and top (which has a scene embroidered on the front with a chain as part of it) in Portugual. I found that clothes which could be worn were a better buy than things that sat around like pottery roosters, although I bought those things too. Children's clothes are less fashion/trendy than clothing for adults. Little kids can get away with wearing things that would look funny on adults - on children the same things look charming. Some friends decided to create a shop online for Portuguese crafts. They have in mind to choose the best in several materials that it is made in our region (Leiria District) and, if succeeded, enlarge the idea to the whole country. It's a nice site, and, even if you don't want to buy, it's a good place to look at some examples of top quality in Portuguese handicrafts. Leave a Comment
