Various: Something Useful

by grandmaR

I bought the hat (which says Portugual) and the shorts and top (which has a scene embroidered on the front with a chain as part of it) in Portugual. I found that clothes which could be worn were a better buy than things that sat around like pottery roosters, although I bought those things too.Children's clothes are less fashion/trendy than clothing for adults. Little kids can get away with wearing things that would look funny on adults - on children the same things look charming.

Any local shop selling handcrafted items: Azulejos, Ceramics and more

by nursesweet

If you keep you eye out in many towns in Portugal, you will find one that sells the customary hand made azulejos (hand painted tiles) and ceramics. Each region has it’s own unique styling and variations. Most often the prices are very reasonable. These items make great gifts and souvenirs. Handmade, Hand-painted Azulejos, Ceramics 2.50 Euro and up

Souvenirs from Madeira

by ncfg

Like in other places I had been, I went to a souvenir shop to buy something to remember Madeira. There are several cute things to buy in Madeira, I bought one azulejo (glazed tile) of a Santana's House and a woman dressed with the traditional costume. (Take a look to my Madeira page to see it)Another souvenir that i bought in Madeira was these lovely things for the kitchen.Take a look to the photo, how lovely are the pot holders (Thanks Mary ;-))And the thing that is in the middle it is used to place the lighters and for decoration in the kitchen.

Porto sweet wine

by micas_pt

When visiting Portugal you can't miss the opportunity to taste and buy Porto sweet wine. You should avoid tourist shops and go to a wine cellar. You will probably get a better deal in wine cellars, regarding quality vs price (even though prices might tend to be high). There are several makes, and some of them are equally good. As in any other wine, price and taste will depend on year, being that Vintage are more expensive.

It helps to look round first and price things up: Leather Goods a Must

by ellierae

I bought many things on my 7 trips to the Algarve. It pays to look round at the different shops and price things up.I bought things from all across the Algarve and from Monichique and Lisbon. I bought a lovely pair of shoes on my first trip out there and different things after that including woollen cardigans from Monchique Mountains, t-shirts, blouses, and terracotta ornaments. Also try the markets they have at Loule and Albuferia nice tablecloths especially at Christmas time. Things before the Euro was very cheap and now just a little more dearer depends on what you are looking for.

Shop 'til you drop

by SonOfLusus

The best souvenirs from Portugal are the painted tiles and ceramics. There are many good stores selling traditional handicrafts in Sintra (although here they tend to be a little more expensive than in other places in the country), and in small towns in the north. If you visit Minho, don't miss the old-fashioned market of Barcelos. But if you're looking for bargains in things you usually shop for at home such as clothes or shoes, the bigger cities have several shopping malls. Colombo Shopping Center in Lisbon is one of Europe's biggest. Portuguese shoes are of excellent quality and are exported to all over the world. You'll find good shoe stores in Lisbon, especially in and around the Chiado district. Also famous world-wide are the wines, especially Port. Also don't overlook the wines of Alentejo or its carpets, especially those of Arraiolos.

Souvenirs from Alentejo

by ncfg

There are beautiful things you can buy in Alentejo such as shepherd's art in wooden, cork and horn objects. I spent one week in this fabulous region of Portugal and I had visited the beautiful small town Marv?o.In the narrow streets and alleys of Marv?o you can find small traditional art shops. They have crafts things hanged on the walls of the houses/shops, so you can easily identify them.Well, i could not leave this beautiful small town without buy a souvenir. So i entered in a local souvenir shop and i took a look around and i chose a little miniature of an Alentejo house and a beautiful cork object.

Jorge Mendes, Lda.: Ceramics in Coimbra, Portugal

by Canadienne

This shop has the highest quality ceramics I came across while in Portugal. There are two floors ~ some sale items downstairs ~ and it is filled with ceramics with a variety of traditional designs on them. They have everything from spoons to jars to wallhangings. . .even some larger pieces that were out of my range.Had I known that I wouldn't encounter this quality of work again, I would have bought a bit more than I did.

Buy Port Wine

by tampa_shawn

You can purchase Port just about anywhere. Since the bottles are heavy I would suggest buying the Port your planning on taking home at the end of your trip. The cheapest place to buy Port is in the stores the locals use, but since I hate carrying extra luggage so I often find it's worth paying an extra dollar or two to make my purchases in the airport shops. If you plan on doing this check your flight times first. The airport shops have limited hours. My flight left before the shops were open! Port, like champagne, can only be legally produced in one region. For Port the region is the Douro River Valley in Portugal. Because of this the Port we drink in the US is all imported from Portugal. So buy it in Portugal and save some money! Port also makes a great gift. We found the Port we paid $40 for in the US was $6, YES SIX dollars in Portugal. When drinking Port remember that Brandy is...

Buy woolens in a small town

by tampa_shawn

My favorite shopping destination was in a little traditional fishing village not far from Fatima. I totally loved this place, the food was wonderful and there were even people wearing the traditional dress of Portugal. I’m not much of a shopper but I went wild here. The stores were filled with beautiful handmade reversible capes (1 bought one), great fishermen’s sweaters (I bought several…and am in fact wearing one as I write this), and some other wonderful sweaters (I bought several). I must say that the quality of these goods were superb and I still wish I had bought more!!! Everything I bought was 100% wool and was of surpurb quality. Warning – the sweaters I saw in major tourist centers were acrylic not wool and were not of the same quality I saw in the smaller towns. I didn't find the prices a "deal" but the quality was so high that even after several years I still get compliments...
