with Portugal being surrounded by the Atlantic on 2 sides, it is obviously a great destination for watersports.
Surfing is very popular here particularly on the west coast, It can be too rough with dangerous undercurrents. So to take on board local information about sea conditions.
The province of Algarve has gained the nickname of 'Sportugal.' Portugal is now one of Europe's top golf destinations. Its world-class golf courses around Lisbon and Algarve now attract visitors from all over the world. Just as popular, but among surfers, are the beaches on the western Atlantic coast. The beaches of Ericeira for example, have held world surfing championships. Fans of that sport should also check out the nearby waters of Peniche and Santa Cruz.
For those who like to go under the water instead, there are opportunities for such activities in the islands of the Azores, where visitors can also go whale-watching. In the mainland, boats also take visitors to the waters south of Lisbon to watch dolphins in their natural habitat.
And although Portugal is known for its mild Mediterranean climate, it does snow in the interior to the north. The area of Serra da Estrela is a mountainous region that is growing as a winter destination with skiing facilities.
from my point of view, the best soccer club in the world. like a disease. once born benfica one must die benfica.
if yu came to portugal, lisboa, a soccer game at the CATHEDRAL, is the breathtaking experience to take. the new (estadio da luz) stadium of light is the gattering spot for benfica supporters to suffer and rejoy every week. it's a religion.
Soccer is a national obsession like it is in most European countries. With the Euro2004 tournament coming up, the country was particularly interested in the sport during my visit. The two most well-known teams are Benfica in Lisbon and their rivals from the north pictured here, FC Porto.
The season runs from September to May.
Another great game that has a great tradition in Portugal is Roller Hockey.
This year Portugal won one more World Cup in Roller Hockey (15 world cups).
Although, I didn't visit the Algarve, Portugal's southern coast is full of beautiful golf courses and resorts. Check out the web link for more information.
