Get to know Portugal's Arab heritage

by berenices

While Portugal does not have the Alhambra, Cordoba, or La Giralda, the Arab conquest and occupation of the Iberian peninsula in the early 8th century nonetheless left a profound mark on the history and culture of Portugal. Today, it is first and foremost obvious in the language, where about 800 Portuguese words come from the Arabic. Many place names especially in the south of the country still retain their Arab origin. Lisbon was Al-Ushbuna, Algarve, etc.An Arab tradition which has endured and eventually has become part of the modern Portuguese identity is the azulejos, or the tiles. Many of the most beautiful buildings and structures found in the country are decorated with azulejos. While blue-on-white monochrome tiles showing figures of animals, flowers, people, etc are common, these were Dutch-influenced. The Arab style is shown in the earlier, geometric styles in yellow, blue, green...

Discover Portuguese gastronomy

by berenices

Portugal is a food lover's haven. A great deal of the country's tradition is centered on its culinary aspects, many dishes and delicacies of which evolved the centuries. Its gastronomy is influenced by its maritime past and access to exotic ingredients at the time of the Discoveries, the culinary traditions of the religious orders that developed in the convents and monasteries. In the Alentejo region, with its harsh land and climate, the gastronomy that developed was unique compared to the other regions, as they make use of herbs that are only found in this area. Situated on the rich Atlantic coast, Portuguese gastronomy is heavily fish and seafood-oriented. Except for the tiny island countries, next to Japan, Portugal has the second highest per capita consumption of fish and seafood in the world. Bacalhau, or codfish, while not fished in Portuguese waters, is practically synonymous to...

Historic villages along the border

by berenices

The eastern part of the country, just above the Tagus river all the way to the north, is dotted with ancient and historic villages, testimony to the presence of men in this part of the peninsula from pre-historic times. This area encompasses the districts of Castelo Branco and Guarda. There are twelve (12) villages in all that have been recognized by the government as Historic Villages, ancient nucleaus of dwellings that pre-dated the formation of the nation of Portugal in the 11th century, or even much further back, before the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century AD. These villages are usually situated on a higher location (a hill, or in a mountain range) thus also becoming in themselves an important defence against invaders, hence to be found military structures like forts, together with a castle within which or just at the walls of which the village is located. These places have...

See the great monasteries and cathedrals

by berenices

For its size, Portugal boasts a disconcerting concentration of great Medieval monasteries, convents and cathedrals -- easily one of the highest anywhere on a per square meter basis. Some of these monumental and grandiose structures were built to fulfill vows for victory in battle or the birth of an heir. 1. Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém (UNESCO heritage site) - in Belém, Lisbon. In 1496, King Manuel 1 petitioned the Holy See to build a monastery at the entrance to Lisbon on the banks of the Tagus River. Construction began in 1501 and took a century to finish. King Manuel I and his descendants are buried there, as well as two of the most illustrious Portuguese, Vasco da Gama and Luis de Camoes whose tombs grace the entrance to the sanctuary. Income from the spice trade (the "pepper tax") paid for the monastery's construction. The Tower of Belém is part of a series of...

Bom Jesus Do Monte.

by cachaseiro

Bom Jesus Do Monte is located 6 kilometres outside Braga and is a mountain with a church on and most important thee is a walkway up to the church that is really spectacular. It´s in baroq style and made like a copy of Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem where you have 12 parying stations along the way before you get to the church. It was originally created because most portugese could not afford a trip to Jerusalem to see the holy city so they created this thing to satisfy the people of north Portugal who have traditionally been more religious than the rest of the country.

Alcobaca.

by cachaseiro

The monestary of Alcobaca is one of the most important historical monuments in Portugal. It was a monestary that was build to celebrate the voctory over the moors at the battle of santarem in 1147.It´s a huge monestary with what is also the biggest church in Portugal.Alcobaca is also the site of the most dramatic love story in portugese history. In the 14th century the portugese prince fell in love with a galician woman called Ines but his father opposed the marriage. They fled to Coimbra and got married secretly, but then started to live openly together. When Pedros father heard of that he send people down to Coimbra who assacinated Ines. When Pedros father died a couple of years later, Pedro had the dead and decomposed body of Ines taken out of the coffin and had her remains crowned as the queen of Portugal and forced all portugese royalty to kiss her hand.Today the bodies of Pedro and Ines...

Lisbon

Lisbon is the city you'll probably fly into when you arrive in Portugal. It is where I spent the most time and made the most memories of this fascinating country. From the various hills in the city, you are able to capture spectacular views over the red-roofed streets below. In fact, the vantage points are one of the city's great attractions. Along with tremendous views, Lisbon offers an abundance of monuments, museums, bustling squares, tireless nightlife and wonderful food. Check out my Lisbon page for details.

Belém's many monuments

by acemj

Just a short tram ride from the commercial center of Lisbon is Belém, which packs a number of Portugal's most recognizable sights into a relatively small area. Along with the Discoveries Monument pictured here, you'll also find an amazing monastery, the home of Portugal's president, the National Coach Museum and the Torre de Belém. Check out my Belém page for more information.
