Belem

by dr.firas

Belem is the translation into Portuguese of Bethlehem, and it is the monumental quarter of Lisbon. The name comes from a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna of Bethlehem which stood near the old port of Restelo where, according to tradition, Vasco da Gama prayed with his sailors the night of July 7, 1497, before embarking on a search for a new routePS I'm giving you the link of the most wonderful Portugal page by my friend Alexandra member *micas_pt* take a look at it I'm giving you the link down here ;-D

Spending time at the beaches in Portugal

by SOLODANCER

How very lucky you are to have a month off in Portugal. Excellent choice. For that amount of time I would if I were you spent it in reasonable chunks/portion of times between several places around the country thus getting a taste of each region. I'd spent a week somewhere up north say around Leiria that has some great beaches in protected fine-forested reserve, another week around Lisbon in the village of Colares (wine-producing old village near the sea) on the foothills of the fabled mountain village of Sintra or across the river Tagus in a fishing town of Sesimbra right by the ocean. And then spend another week somewhere on the coast of Alentejo which has some incredible unspoilt and uncrowded fishing towns with first class beaches. Here I'd recommend to you the tiny fishing village of Zambujeira do Mar perched on a crag with miles and miles of secluded cliffs and beaches. Look up my...

One day in Lisbon

by SOLODANCER

Only one day for and in Lisbon? This is criminal. Thus, no matter how much you'd try it would be hard for you in this case to get a reasonable appreciation of this great and beautiful city. Also, you're staying in the suburb of Queluz which is a good distance away from the center of the old city.Be that as it may, get up and start really early to get as much you can possibly absorb of old Lisbon. Since as you mentioned you love to walk, you can consider the following options:- From Queluz take the train all the way to the Rossio Station, its last stop; this puts you right into the center of the old city. You can start walking from here and simply wander around.- From the Rossio train stop, you can also walk up or take the Elevador da Gloria right next to the main Tourism Office upwards to the bohemian neighborhood of Bairro Alto. A highly interesting neighborhood with tons of great...

15 days in Portugal

by SOLODANCER

I have the feeling that that would be the ancient city of Evora which is the main town in the Alentejo region which is near Lisbon. For sure you must try your best to make time for Evora, it's a beautiful richly historical place. Near Evora there's also the historic and equally charming tho smaller in size towns of Vila Vicosa and Beja worth visiting.I agree with Cubsur's itenerary suggestions for you, skip the Algarve if you're wanting principally history and culture, unless you desire more sun and sea or simply curious. And as he's mentioned, there really is just the town of Silves in the Algarve that could offer you the historical perspective of the region. For what you've got in mind for this trip, Estremadura (Lisbon area) towards all of Northern Portugal and then some of Alentejo are clearly more suitable and way far more worthwhile. Coimbra, Guimaraes (where Portugal's history...

Torre de Belem

by margaretvn

This tower was commissioned by Manuel I and built in 1515 - 21 as a fortress in the middle of the Tagus. It is a really beautiful Manueline building which is really wonderfully decorated - I especially loved the knots and rope. There are Moorish style watchtowers and battlements shaped as shields. The interior under the terrace, is Gothic in design and was used as storage room for weapons and as a prison.

The National Pantheon or Santa Engracia

by margaretvn

The National Pantheon or Santa Engracia is a lovely building. The original church collapsed during a storm in 1682 and then this Baroque building replaced it. It was not completed until 1966. It house the tombs of heros from Portugese history such as Vasco da Gama. The interior is from coloured marble and the roof is wonderful. When we were visiting there was an exhibition about Amalia Rodrigues and her tomb is also in the building

Lisboa/ Lisbon

by margaretvn

We only had one day to explore this city so we had to make choices about what we wanted to pack into the day. The main thing for us was of course the Amalia Rodrigues Museum but we also wanted to see her tomb in the National Pantheon. We were ,by chance there on the 6th of october, 10 years after the death of the Fado singer and there was a special exhibition about her in the National Pantheon. Then we wanted to see Monument to the Discoveries and the Torre de Belem. We had hoped to pack in the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos as well but ran out of time! We had a hotel about 45 kilometres out of the city and although it was a great hotel it cost us a lot of time to get into the city - we got stuck in a traffic jam and lost about 2 hours in the morning. So the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is still on the list for the next time.

Casa -Museu Amalia Rodrigues

by margaretvn

This is the house where Amalia lived for the 40 or so years of her life and since she died in 1999 things have not been changed. So when you take the (guided) tour of the house it is just as if she could come through the door at any time. The house is in fact not very big but the rooms are filled with her furniture and art. All around there are also her shoes and handbags and her stage jewellery. In some of the rooms are dresses she wore when performing.Amalia Rodrigues was born on the 23rd of July 1920 in Lisbon and she died on the 6th of October 1999 - by chance we visited the house on that day 10 years later. She started singing when she was just 15 years old and made her debut as a Fado singer at the Retiro da Severa. She travelled all over the world during her career and received a huge amount of awards and decorations both from Portugal and from countries around the world. In 2001...

Cascais.

by cachaseiro

Cascais is a small town just outside Lisbon and kinda like a wealthy Lisbon suburb. It is in my opinion the perfect place to stay if you plan to explore Lisbon as you have a pleasant little town without all the hustle and bustle of Lisbon, but you can get in there in half an hour by public transport. And Cascais has excellent places to dine aswell, so you don´t need to starve while you are there.

Figueira da foz.

by cachaseiro

Figueira da foz is a fairly big town on the portugese coast with a big industrial harbour and a huge beach.I had heard a lot of bad about it before i got there and was positivly suprised about the place.I really liked the place and the beach there is execellent and so is the choice of hotels in town in all price ranges.I would say that it´s a good place to have as a base while exploring central Portugal and all the historic sites you have there.
