Palacio de Queluz

by Canadienne

Speed through the self-guided tour of the palace itself ~ the chandeliers look cheap and kitschy, as do the panelled mirrors in every room. It may have been impressive at one time, but it's somewhat depressing now. . .the only places worth slowing down are in the Don Quixote room (lovely wooden floor) and the hallway with the azulejos (tiles) representing the seasons. Also, beware of the palace cafeteria/snack shop ~ our waiter may have been a one-off, but it was the only rude treatment we encountered in the country ~ I'd avoid it. Head straight through the palace and into the gardens ~ this is the real treat (and the only reason to come). The fountains, statues and manicured shrubs are beautiful ~ if you are here on a sunny day, it's close to heaven.

Watch Tourist Fado Clubs

by tampa_shawn

Fado, the portuguese traditional music, is wonderful and a must see while in Portugal. But be aware of the Tourist Fado clubs they can be very expensive in an underhand way.We ran into several college students who "lost" over $100 in one night in a Fado Club. We were lucky to get out of ours for about $50 per person. The olives, butter, bread and cheese that are automatically put on the table in Portugal are normally about $3 US per person in regular restaurants. But in some Fatima clubs a few olives will cost you $8. If you don’t want to pay that price don’t eat and send back. Many also charge a large cover and their drinks are extremely expensive. So look for the fatima bars the local go to, where you can get the same experience for a fraction of the price

Cascais - overcommericalised & overrated!

by Miz

I visited this place, as it was sold to me as a traditional Portugese fishing village, but it was in actuality a full-blown tourist resort town with exorbidant prices to match! Unless you enjoy shopping for goods at higher prices than in Lisbon, this place is best avoided. This is the only time during my tour of Spain and Portugal that I felt truly cheated. If you have to spend some time here, take a walk down the main street, as there are some nice buildings and shops to look at. I suggest window shopping as everything is overpriced here. If you are willing to fork out Euro 0.80 for a cork postcard you could buy in Lisbon for Euro 0.50 or spend Euro 1 a minute to suf the internet, be my guest. Rather than waste your precious travel time meandering here, head over to nearby Sintra. It is a truly beautiful place and the prices are pretty reasonable.

i went to albufira in the algarve, it wasn't very nice, it was cold in june and there were dogs running around that were strays, it seemed to me to be dirty too, beware of it. we stayed near a place called the 'strip'

The Strip is not really a tourist trap, but terrible enough to mention in this section. The restaurants aren't half as good as elsewhere in Albufeira, and it is crowded with young tourists, dutch and english bars and proppers. Nice if you are looking for a Benidorm-kind-of-atmosphere but there is nothing portuguese about it.The bar on the photo is elsewhere in Albufeira, this was a nice one.

When travelling by train,...

by maripol

When travelling by train, there mostly are people on board, that will try to sell you pencils or other small things. Most of the time they are children descending from gypsy's. On the square near the monument for the world discoverers, there is a chance, that you will be approched by a friendly man or woman, who is very willing to tell you something about his or her city and the monument. When he or she is ready and you wil thank him or her for the friendly explanation, he or she will not leave before you give some money. If they think it is not enough, they will follow you and point out what kind of amount they expect from you.

by JenniferG

Be aware that public transport is an adventure itself!! It's absolutely not reliable. There are busses but they won't take you far. The train, if it leaves it will leave with delay (sometimes a few hours). If you have enough time it's an option to go by public transport. If not, rent a car.

by HMAPA

As in many other countries, taxi drivers may tend to take a longer path. If you more or less know the way, make some suggestions, although it might annoy some drivers (nevermind, it's your money).Nevertheless they are cheap and you may even enjoy the extra sights, so who knows if it's worth after all?

Well, in Algarve the best months are all except August, because all the people have their hollidays in August. And sometimes it is very very hot. I prefer Juin, Jully, September to enjoy the beaches, and the others months to enjoy the relaxing, the calm life and the superb climate. This is me in the street where I was born, near the house where I spend my firsts 9 years of life, and that no longer exists...

by marko727

ON THE STREETS OF LISBON THERE ARE THOSE PERSONS WHO WILL TELL YOU AN INTERESTING STORY IN CONJUNCTION WITH TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMETHING. IN MY CASE, A VERY FRIENDLY BUT SKITTISH MAN APPROACHED ME, TO ADVISE THAT HE WORKED ON A SHIP, AND THAT HE CAME IN TO SOME GOOD FORTUNE BY BEING ABLE TO ACQUIRE A SMALL SHIPMENT OF QUALITY CAMERAS...AT WHICH POINT HE HESITANTLY SHOWED ME ONE OF THE CAMERAS. INDEED, IT DID LOOK OF GOOD QUALITY. NOW, HAVING HAD MY CAMERA STOLEN THE OTHER DAY, I WAS IN THE MARKET FOR A GOOD CAMERA, AND FELT THAT I ALSO MIGHT HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF GOOD FORTUNE. THE DEAL WAS SURREPTITOUSLY STRUCK..................THE PHOTOS YOU SEE ON THIS PAGE ARE A TRUE TESTAMENT TO THE 'QUALITY' OF MY NEW FOUND CAMERA...!
