Regular trains run between Lisbon and Sintra, taking about 40 minutes. From the airport we took a taxi to Sintra (advised due to terrible weather). This took about 30 minutes and cost about £20.Trams in Lisbon are frequent and cheap.

by DCsalsera

If you go by train, don't take a cab at the train station. They'll take you on a 'tour' of the city. (This is true in most cities in Europe) Walk a ways if you don't have too much luggage, and catch a cab somewhere else. Have a map of the city so you can show the cab driver that you know where you're going. The train from Spain is not the most luxurious to say the least, but it definitely adds to the experience. The guys in our group rented a car and got pulled over twice and ended up having to pay hundreds of dollars on the spot to police officers that most likely pocketed the money. I say go for the train!! This is a pic from our train ride back, we all got to sit together...awww, aren't they cute??

by schielen

Portugal can only be reached over land through Spain. Because of the distance many travelers prefer to fly to Portugal. Alternatively you could go there by boat, since Portugal has a lot of ports. In the picture you see our car that brought us without one problem to Portugal and back, more than 6000 kilometers in 4 weeks.During our travel to and from Portugal we camped in France and Spain. Information about these stops can be found on other VT-pages, which you can find using the following links: Tours, Spain and Bordeaux.

It is easy and relatively cheap to get to Tavira from Faro by coach. The journey takes about an hour and you will arrive at the bus terminal by the river which is only a two minute walk away from the main square and the tourist office.

by Gerry_Crooks

Anyone from North America, two choices: Fast and easy by plane. Slow and very easy by boat. I went by plane into Lisboa. Hired a car to travel the distance south to the Algarve. Great way to see the country side and get your bearings. Unless you are like me and get lost very easy. Then you do see more country side but question your bearings!I like the car thing. Start when I want, stop when I want. Get stuck in traffic when THEY want. Hey, this is life, right? Though I did take the train system to visit the East-West trail of the Algarve. Great way and cheap. Cost us 20$ Canadian for first class seats. Next time I will take second class at 16$, and mix with the locals and visiters. First class got very lonely!Of course walking is the only real way to visit a particular town or area. Take a basket and stop to lunch on the beach!

We flew with Iberia via Madrid to Lisbon - no problem We bought a 'tourist pass' in Lisbon that is valid for four days and is valid on all public transport - no problems with standing in a queue to buy a ticket or not having the correct change, etc. We travelled by train from Lisbon to Cascais and by bus from there to Cabo da Roca and Sintra. Back to Lisbon by train - no problem. The photo is of an 'elevador' in Lisbon.

To Portugal Plain, Ship, Car...In Portugal between cities, car, bus or train. In the cities public transportation (or car… but better let the car outside the city and take a taxi, bus or metro, if in Lisbon or, almost done, in Porto).

Easiest and cheapest route is to fly into Lisbon. From there you take the ferry to the train station. At the train station pick where you want to go. But make sure you buy something to eat and drink before you get on the train.Walking is the best way to get around.
