I wouldn't recommend Air Transat to anyone. We were delayed and as someone on the plane said 'they couldn't organize a p_ss-up in a brewery'.Rent a car. They are not that expensive and gas is a little bit expensive but seemed to be cheaper than England.
By plane or by car to the capital city, LISBON.The International Airport to the city center is about 7KM and I'd highly recommend that you hail a cab. Cab fares are really very cheap here. To move around the city, you can either choose to take the subway, bus, cab or electric tram. It's a pretty fun experience (really) to just hop onto one... er, the tram, I mean. Try it. You must.
From Scotland to Faro by Air.Faro to Sagres is about an hour by taxi. The hotel offered to arrange for the local taxi to collect us from the airport and we recieved a warm welcome from the owner who recognised us from our previous visit. We enjoyed a pleasant comfortable ride and stopped midway for a cup of tea. The price (Jan-April 200)worked out for one-way about £50 sterling, 15000 escudos or approx. $90 US dollars. You can hire a car from the airport or arrange the hire from home.A car is very useful and can be booked via the hotel,the rates are good and often it will be a new car. Avis gave a good deal but then spoilt it by charging for repairs to an already faulty tyre so check the small print. Public transport is ok.
TAP (Air Portugal), the national airline, has direct flights to Lisbon from a number of destinations including England, France, Spain, the USA and Canada. Direct and regular bus services operate from France, Spain and England. Train connections from France and Spain are just as routine, with a number of scenic stops en route. The old and new... shame... but in the name of technology it had to be done...If you rent a car be careful, drivers are as crazy as they have always been. There are many new roads and motorways now so check your map before heading somewhere. There is nothing worse than getting lost in circles.
I THINK THE BEST WAY TO GET PORTUGAL( AND THE NICEST WAY IS BY CAR) COMING ACROSS GALICIA(SPAIN) OR ACROSS EXTREMADURA.ANYWAY, THE TRAIN THERE IS GROWING FAST AND I THINK SOON WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO ARRIVE BY TRAIN.YOU CAN ALSO TAKE THE SHIP IN TUI(SPAIN) THAT CROSS THE RIVER- YOU CAN TAKE IN IT YOUR OWN CAR. IF YOU WANT TO SEE COUNTRY AND SO, BEST WAY IS BY FOOT, BUT IF YOU ARE HURRY, BETTER TAKE BUS OR OWN CAR. THE PRICES ARE ALSO VERY GOOD.AND FOR A SUMMER WAY, OF COURSE,BICYCLE.
I arrived in Lisbon from Spain, in a tour bus. I did not expect to find such an incredible array of beauty and that great feeling of joy, I experienced when I got to Portugal. It is not a big country, yet I think it is quite easy to get around in this Iberian country. Whether you, use the train or bus to get to some of the great towns of this country.
Airplanes are the fastest and, ultimately, easiest way to get to Portugal.Buses are the most abundant source of travel within the country. Taxis are also available, but are more expensive than buses.
You can fly to Portugal ,but i travelled by night train from Paris through Spain. There are 3 trains a day from Madrid to Lisbon with changes.
