Car parking in major cities

by Elena_blue

Car parking has a charge during weekdays, daytime. It is usually 0.30-0.50E per hour. It is paid on machines on the street and in some cases car cannot be parked to some places for more than a few hrs. Parking is free from 8 o'clock in the evening until next day morning. Parking is free during weekend starting from Friday afternoon.

Portugal by car 1: General

by Elena_blue

I drove about 2.000 klms in 6 days north of Lisbon. I enjoyed it! Road network and condition is sufficient, with highways to connect major cities, traffic was low, sometimes highways almost empty! Tolls to most highways I paid totally about 80 euros (plus a penalty of 35e see next tips). Parking is controlled in most city centres. More specific tips follow.

Buses - Best Way

by tigerjapan

Rede Expresso buses are the best mode of public transport to use in Portugal (in most cases). More often than not the bus station is closer to town than the train station and the bus is cheaper. Also, the buses run more often in most cases also.If your planning to travel to or from Fatima, don't use the train. The station is 25km from the town. The bus station is central.

Portugal Hire cars

by TONY786

I flew into Faro on the algarve and picked up a hire car at "SIXT" just outside the gates the staff again young kids who have no people skills at all the car however was adream a alfa romeo 159, it is supplied with a full tank and should be returned the same way they asked that i swipe my credit card in case of damages and i later found out they had swiped £1,200 which they returned when i took the car back.I travelled on the excelleny A2 from Faro to Lisbon ensure you pay or get a ticket from the toll booth at faro as the other end 3 hours later in lisbon they will charge you 35 euros instead of the 14 it costs.the road was empty all the way until we hit Lisbon then all hel let loose total gridlock and attempting to ask directions let alone stop in this city is a nightmare and the drivers have no fear drive on the right with left hand drive cars, motorways and service stations are...

Taxi from Airport

by geordieontour

Get an easy start to your Holiday , they bring you from Faro airport to wherever you need within the Algarve, West Spain and other selected locations in Portugal.Just look for your destination on the list and you will find the price per transfer.Prices are per transfer - not per person! At the airport you will be met in the arrivals area by a representative of YOR car hire-Young Original car hire. Please look out for someone with a black and yellow YOR sign. You do not have to pay anything before arriving at the airport Faro. You pay the total transfer amount directly to the driver by credit card or in cash.If your flight is delayed there is no need to worry - we always confirm flight directly with the airport control at the airport Faro and will be waiting for you until you arrive.Perfect service both ways will use again

Renting a car

by Latvietis

We rented a car in Evora to be returned in Faro. The price was low and the car was great, but on return, a girl went over with a fine comb and found "damages", such as a scratch under the bumper. These had been there before, but the initial inspection did not see them and the papers were not given to me. It amounted to several hundred dollars extra charges. With no time to argue and nobody speaking English, I waited to return home and report to American Express. They reimbursed me without a question.

Hiring Cars

by challenger

Hiring a car is an excellent option for exploring the countryside and areas that would be more inaccessible by train or bus otherwise. Contrary to warnings from Portuguese friends, driving in Portugal was not anywhere as chaotic as I expected it to be even in the cities. The Portuguese sure love their cars and you won’t see a lot of vehicles with dents in them: indication that people mind the safety distance. In the back of my mind I had feared that traffic at least in the cities would be like in Paris or Rome, but it was a far cry from it, so I can’t help but recommend it.Please bear in mind that there are some steep toll fees when driving on the main motor ways. These charges can add a lot to the overall cost.Trains and buses are cheap, effective and reliable and inner-city public transport is a joy, so if you’re thinking of hiring a car, take it during times when you intend to visit...

Trains in Portugal

by metteks

Traveling around Portugal on trains is very easy. They are reliable and comfortable but not always with a smart and hip design. We used mostly the local trains, since we had an interrailpass. We found it odd when the train from Lisbon to Lagos, not had a door to separate the smoking and non-smoking area. We even had to sit in the smoking area, since those were the only free seats. On top of that the local guys in front of us, going on holyday, smoked pot and chatted away and we wanted nothing to do with them. The ticket conductor was nice though, making sure we got reservations for the nearly leaving train by dragging us to the ticket office and pushing us in first in line.

Park outside the old towns

by Markyreid

The freeways/highways are great and link the major towns together. However when you enter the very old part of towns it is best to park on the outside of this area as the roads are poorly marked, narrow and difficult to navigate. Saying this though, it you are up for some adventure, try driving through one for a bit of fun and an understanding of what the locals must do each day. Driving right up to Silves castle is a good opportunity to do this.
