The best way to visit all this beautiful Portugal is by car. You can easily reach all the hidden places you must see and the roads now are rather good. There are highways that cross all the country. Some tips about driving in Portugal:>All motor vehicles drive on the right. > Unless otherwise indicated, vehicles approaching from the right have priority at junctions. >Seatbelts are obligatory. >The law is strict regarding drinking and driving. >The maximum speed in towns is 50 km p/h and on main roads and highways is 90 and 120 km p/h respectively. >Petrol stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. >On highways services stations are open 24 hours a day.

Daily international trains run between Paris-Lisbon (Sud Express), crossing the frontier at Vilar Formoso; between Lisbon-Madrid, crossing the frontier at Marvão; and between Oporto-Vigo, crossing the frontier at Valença. If you want to explore Portugal by train, there are Express trains from Lisbon through Coimbra to Oporto (Alfa trains) and regional trains (Inter-cidades and Inter-regionais) connecting the different areas of Portugal.

IMHO The best way to see Portugal is to take train until Oporto, then a car to get around. In 2001 I travelled with the car until Lisboa and nearest city.In 1998 I'll try to take a train from Spain to Lisboa (there was the EXPO) but without reservation it was impossible to do. Trains are not so much...

I have good and bad recommendations on this company. The staff is very likeable and considerate but rarely the airplanes leave on scheduale and the trips are not very cheap. Any way it is the best air Portuguese company.

Just a quick note to tell you about travelling in Portugal with a car. It's a great way to get to least accessible places, which usually are the best ones. But there are somethings you should be advised of. portuguese don't have a very civilized and respectfull driving (they seem to think they're smarter than all the rest, whatever that means), our roads are lousy and we actually pay to drive them :0 If you have to take motor-way (which is an option that i don't really enjoy, but in portugal the other roads are even worse, and it's a lot faster) be ready to pay... a lot. let's say, from Lisbon to algarve you can pay 15euros of toll!! (you can close your mouth now :)) )but hey, you're on holidays. lol

Bus and trains

by TinKan

The bus and train service around Portugal is very good. If you are a student you can get your train pass for around 50% off and the bus provides a hefty discount as well.If you are coming from the USA purchase a 15 or 30 day rail pass in the states before coming over as you can get some good deals on one country rail passes.
