Trams

by acemj

The trams in Lisbon are as much a novelty and an icon of the city as they are a practicality. Be sure to ride the #28 tram at some point if you visit Lisbon. It's cheap and the tram will take you through some of the most charming parts of the city.

Taxi

by acemj

I noticed taxis in all the towns I visited although you might have to go to a major public square to get one to stop for you. The prices in Lisbon were very cheap as compared to other place I've taken taxis. To get a cab from my house in Charlotte, NC, USA to the airport which is about a 20 minute ride costs about $25. I took a 20 minute ride in Lisbon that was about $5! I didn't have any problems with dishonest cabbies, but be sure to ask approximately how much it will be before you get in.

By Train

by acemj

You can get to and around Portugal by train. I only took a short ride to Sintra, but the train was modern and comfortable and it was only 2.50 Euros roundtrip from Lisbon for the roughly one hour journey. Check the website below for fares and schedules.

By Car

by acemj

Renting a car was one of the highlights of my visit to Portugal. I was able to see so much more of the country than I would otherwise have been able to see. Many of the major rental agencies do business in Portugal and the main offices are located in the major cities. I've read that it's sometimes more expensive to rent a car in the Algarve than elsewhere in the country.

By Air

by acemj

Portugal has three international airports at Lisbon, Porto and Faro. Its main international carrier is TAP Air Portugal and its main domestic carrier is PGA Portugalia Airlines. I've only been to Lisbon (airport code: LIS) and I can tell you that it's very modern and transportation connections are easy to find. Just look for the information counter and you'll have no problem. Other carriers that fly to Portugal include Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Iberia, KLM, LAM, Lufthansa, Royal Air Maroc, Sabena, Swiss Air, TAAG Angola Airlines, TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, Transavia Airlines, Tunisair, TWA and Varig.

Renting a car is easy and the price was ok

by Franberu

From Lisbon, we took the train to Oporto. This was a good experience and we notice that the rails in Portugal are larger than in other countries of Europe. After our stay in Oporto we have rented a car to complete the tour of the northern part of Portugal and get back to Lisbon. The roads were offering us nice panoramic sights. We have visited Bucao, Vila Real, Valenca do Minho, Viseu, Coimbra, Fatima, Nazaré and a few other interesting spots.

Driving in Portugal

by Canadienne

When it comes to a country the size of Portugal, driving makes a lot of sense. It's a perfect way to get out into the countryside and small villages. We drove through some of the tiniest towns, happening upon churches and vineyards wherever we went. Much of that wouldn't have been possible on public transport. The driving in Portugal was comparable to home ~ I parked outside of Porto to avoid driving into the city, something we were thankful for when we saw the skill and tenacity with which our taxi-driver had to handle himself. The car was picked up and dropped off at the Lisbon airport ~ again avoiding traffic in a congested and built-up area.

Wear Good Shoes

by tampa_shawn

Lisbon's sidewalks are beautifully paved in mosaics. I found them very charming. Lisbon is a great walking city. Although since I’m from Florida and am unused to walking up and down steep hills I was horribly sore at the end of each day. The sidewalks are wide but unevenly paved so be sure to wear good shoes! The weather in Lisbon changes by the minute so wear layers and have a rain coat with you at all timesPlease see my Portugal pages for some in depth Travellogues

Trams, buses and taxis

by Miz

I only had one afternoon to explore Lisbon, but got to see a lot by taking a taxi to and from the hotel to Rossio Square and using the tram to go up and down the hill. Taxis are relatively cheap in Portugal. Our hotel was located a bit outside the city centre but the cab ride only cost approximately Euro 5 each way. Lisbon also has a metro (which would cut transport costs even further) but I didn't use it as time was of the essence.

Buses

by Mykke

We used the bus service often. Based in Vilamoura we were centrally placed for Faro or Albufeira. The buses are simple to use regular and quick. A one way trip from Vilamoura to Faro (@ 15 Kms) costs 2.80 Euros (@ £4.00). The main Algarve bus company is Eva Transportes S.A.
