I arrived by bus from Seville....

by Ben-UK

I arrived by bus from Seville. The bus station is by the river, just 2 minutes walk from the central square, the Praca de Republica. The train station is 1km from the centre, straight up the Rua da Liberdade. From here, you can take slow trains to other towns on the Algarve, or the express to Lisbon. The nearest international airport is Faro, only 30km away.Spain is only about 30 minutes drive away too.Tavira is small and easy to walk around.

We flew with a special fare ticket from home to Lisbon. One thing we discovered : Portugal is the cheapest country in Europe for renting a car...so do it !!! It's the best way to visit especially the south and to reach most of the places.>>>> second picture shows that you don't need a car in downtown Lisbon !!! Nice pedestrian zones... <<<<

you know what they say...all roads lead to Rome! Well, our friends, the romans, forgot that all the roads that lead to Rome also lead to every place where they start! So you can come by car using the road! But I'm also your friend, so my advice is... take the plane!!!Use a car or the trains!

by maripol

The public transport is well organised and cheap. Only, it is a southern country, so don't be mad, when a train or a bus does not leave or arrive at the time it is expected to. But what the hack, you are on holiday, so don't hurry, be happy.

From most of the countries - airplaneI rented a car. This trip was a bit crazy, I had no time to find out connections between interesting places and I wanted to see as much of the country as possible. I was very comfortable way and I could go to few less known places like the megaliths or prehistoric cave. In Lisbon, as always, the best way to get around is to walk. To reach Belem I took a tram. Well, it’s worth to have some trip by an old tram, just to find out how it is.

If you come from outside the Iberian Peninsula, coming by airplane is the best way.By train is the best second alternative (from Europe to portuguese mainland, of course).By sea (cruises or sailing on your own ship) should be very very nice, if you have the time and if you can go through the waters of the Atlantic without being sick. Going to the Azores or to Madeira by sea is a must between seasoned sailors. If you come from Spain and if driving does not bother you, bring your car.Portugal has 5 international airports: Lisbon (Portela), Porto (Sa Carneiro), Faro, Funchal (Santa Catarina, in Madeira Island) and Ponta Delgada (John Paul II, in the Azores Islands). The other important airports (more dedicated to regional flights) are the ones of Porto Santo (in archipaellago of Madeira), Santa Maria, Horta and Flores (all in the Azores islands).Portugal has four main connections by train to...

The simplest way to get in...

by a005116

The simplest way to get in Portugal is by plane (from Belgium). There are three major airports; Lisboa, Porto and Faro. When I went to Portugal I took a Lufthansa flight from Brussels to Frankfurt and then to Lisboa (because it was cheaper than a direct flight). I had to pay about € 210 for a youth ticket.A ticket with Sabena or Tap for the direct flight Brussels/Lisboa was about € 295. When you arrive in the airport in Lisboa and you want to get into town (on a cheap way) you'll have to take the bus, but not the 'Aerobus'. The Aerobus is much more expensive. When I went to Portigal we got arround by train and bus. The Public transportation in Porugal is actually very good and cheap, but unfortunately also very slow.

by Fransen

This advice is specifically for Almourol. There is a small train station not too far from the castle. There aren't many signs, but you can pretty much keep the castle in view as you find your way to it. Watch what you're doing when you take the train back, you don't want to miss it because it doesn't run regularly. The train can appear on either side of the track, if you find yourself on the wrong side, don't hesitate to jump onto the track and just climb onto the train from the wrong side. This is what I did. Everyone in and around the small cafe/restaurant near the station will be more than happy to help you as well.
