Complaining about service

by micas_pt

Restaurants, hotels and other places related to this kind of service have, by law, a book where customers can write their complains about service or products. It is called in Portuguese "Livro de Reclamações" and it could be translated as "Complaint Book". Everything you write there will be sent to the Tourism Service and the hotel or restaurant will have to justify what and why it happened. I would advise you not to play with this, but use it if you feel that service and products weren't good. Probably the manager will try to "solve" things so that you don't write on that book, because it might have serious consequences for the place. It happened to me asking for this book and they answered that they couldn't give it to me as it was closed in someone's desk and that the manager was out in a meeting and had the key with him. If this happens you should insist and write down on your...

Strong sun

by micas_pt

During summer months, the sun is very strong. So if you are on the beach make sure you apply frequently some sunscreen. In Portugal doctors recommend that you go to the beach: before 11am, after 5pm. Even if not in the beach but visiting some city, you may also get sunburnt, so I would advise you to wear sunscreen and carry some water with you.

Taxi drivers

by micas_pt

I guess that this is a warning that you might find in many cities all through the world - taxi drivers. Yes, you might find some taxi driver that will drive you through the longest path so that they earn more. In Portugal, all taxis have a taximeter inside the vehicle. To make sure that the driver applies the correct fee, look at the window - taxis have a table there with the prices, which may vary according to the period of the day (night is more expensive) or the day of the week (weekends are more expensive). You will pay an extra fee for putting your luggage on the back of the taxi. But not all taxi drivers will try to earn more money, as many of them are honest people. They have a ID card with their name and number; if you are not satisfied take not of that number and complain about taxi driver.

Pickpockets

by micas_pt

As in any other country, you should use some sense when standing in crowded places and keep your wallet safe. Pickpockets are common in Portugal, mainly in big cities and touristy places. Bus, underground, Algarve, Lisboa, Porto or other crowded places or cities are usually affected by this "activity". If something of the kind happens you should contact Police immediately and cancel all your cards.

Airport Taxi Fare

by gosp

We took the taxi from the airport to the hotel because we had considerable luggage. I didn't notice that the driver did not have his meter running, and was quite surprised when he charged me 25 euros for the ride. Two weeks later, the reverse ride cost only 4.7 euros with the meter running. The first driver clearly saw an opportunity to take advantage of a foreigner, and did so. I'm not sure of the legality of the practice. I think the airport taxis have more lenient rules. If I had to do it all over again I think I would try to get a price from the driver before leaving the airport. The other alternative is to take the special airport bus which only costs 1 euro. Live and learn!

When swimming in the sea...

by lupine

If you go for a dip in the sea, watch out for any areas that are roped off for, say, water skiing, not only because, in case you miss the ropes, you could end up being run over, but also incase you DON'T miss the ropes! I had a very bad experience when I came up agaisnt one whilst in a large rubber tyre. Because the direction of the waves was pushing me into the rope and I couldn't get out of the ring without going underwater (which I was scared of doing just in case i got even more tangled in the rope) the METAL rope was carving a line into my side and lower abdomen. It hurt like hell and my sister had to rescue me. I had a red line across there for the rest of my holiday! I hadn't seen the rope because a) it was a grey rope underwater, and b) it didn't have any bouys or warnings attatched to it, so keep an eye out!!

Warnings . . .

by acemj

Well, I've been told that parts of Lisbon are a little dangerous at night, but I didn't experience it. I've also read that the tourist-filled beaches of the Algarve are sometimes bothered by pickpocket and thieves. Take the usual precautions and you should be fine. Statistically, Portugal has a lower than average rate of crime as compared to the rest of Europe.

Speeding

by TinKan

Remember that speeding it not allowed and the fines can be very large (if they catch you). Most fines are paid on the spot and if you do not have the cash you will be escorted to the closest ATM to pay the fine.Speeds in town: 50 km/hSpeeds inbetween towns: 70 km/hSpeeds on autostrada: 120 km/hThere are many unmarked police cars used in Portugal which include BMW 3 series (blue and green ones) and for high speed the new Subaru sport which I have seen chase and catch many sports cars in excess of 250 km/h

Palace of Monserrate ~ major renovations

by Canadienne

Monserrate includes both a wild, sprawling garden and a palace (once home to Sir Francis Cook). The gardens are worth a visit in themselves ~ you can wander at leisure, even passing the ruins of an old chapel. It's very romantic. . .but be advised, in March 2002 the palace was under repair.

Unscrupulous taxi drivers

by Miz

Although I had no such encounter, people I have talked to have been taken for a ride so to speak by unscrupulous taxi drivers. Taxi drivers should be aware of all major hotels so don't believe them if they tell you they don't know the way and try to take you in the opposite direction.
