by schielen

This isn't dangerous at all, but I didn't know where else to put this information :-)If you're a religious (christian) person and would like to burn a candle in a church, don't be supprised to find a machine in Portugese churches like the one in the picture. You basicly just have to drop a coin in, and the electric 'candle' wil burn the time you have paid for.....

The roads in Portugal are...

by J.I.M

The roads in Portugal are apparently the worst in Europe and have the most road accidents. When my family first arrived there we spent hours trying to use a road map to find the hotel we were staying at! Unless you're a fairly confident driver, you may want to stick with some sort of public transport. Crossing the roads can be quite dangerous as well.

We climbed this cliff top and it seemed ok getting there but I really was frightened on the way back as there was nothing to hold on to and one slip would have been adidos (dont know the portugese word)

by Gerry_Crooks

The only concern about traveling outside the 'Tourist' areas is the language barrier. And this is a minimum condition compared to many other countries I have visited. I speak both English and French so I managed to get by rather well. In the out-of-the-way towns the locals may only speak Portugeuse. Their dialects can be difficult for someone like me trying to learn their language. But we got by using hand and facial manuveurs I thought I was not capable of!

by Ancsurka

Although the weather is OK throughout the year in Madeira, your trip will be more pleasant if you take a 'poncho' or an umbrella along with you. There was no cold or cool in September 1999, but the wet clothes are not comfortable for most of us...

by MarcoAntonio

Well, one day when i was in Oporto this guy tried to pick me up in his Citroen Safari! OK, so I was wearing shorts and it was extremely hot... about 30*C, but even though he offered me money... sorry, he really wasn't my type! YUK!

by Muriel

Be careful in the larger cities, particularly Lisbon, where bag-snatchings and wallet stealing seem to be on the increase.A gang will surround a couple, grab the lady's purse and the gentleman's wallet and speed off. If you are sitting on a bench, keep your handbag firmly in front of you. To avoid these problems, store most of your money, passports etc in the hotel safe, use a hidden pocket, or a fanny pack under your shirt or blouse, and carry only the money you think you will need.In the Algarve, it is quite safe to walk out at any time of the night. However, don't invite trouble. It hasn't happened yet, but you don't want to be the first to have a bag snatched. There is little violent crime in Portugal. If you are travelling by car, use the same precautions as you would in North America. Don't leave anything in plain sight in the car, and don't leave luggage in the trunk.

The Atlantic Ocean is...

by matcrazy1

The Atlantic Ocean is beautifull but maybe dangerous for the two reasons: high waves (especially on the southwest cost) and tides. The high tide comes slowly but if you sleep alone on the empty beach (it's really possible to find such a beach on the southwest coast)you may be suddenly awaken completely wet. On crowded and flat beaches of Algarve (south coast) waves are low or very low; during high tide the beach becomes too narrow, so its better not to reserve place close to the ocean. MORE INFORMATION IN MY TRAVELOGUES. WELCOME!

by caroline_d

The one thing that I saw as a relly big scare was the traffic. They drove very fast even on small roads, just big enough for two lanes. On the motorways the speed was over 150 Km/h.Other than this I saw Portugal/Algarve as a very clean and not more dangerous than any other country.

by hcameron

Do not do this when you are traveling. I was positioning my car to enter a parking spot. I backed up no more than a foot and crash. The young lady driving this car had pulled up right behind me. The policia and everybody were very nice. I offered to go to a garage and get the headlight fixed. The 'other' damage and the headlight came to $220 dollars. I negotiated it down to $165 dollars and everybody was happy. Getting into an accident is always a nightmare. There was no damage to the rental.
